Minnesota Meltdown

The U is feeling the heat. While generations of Minnesota kids could only dream of wearing the iconic maroon and gold “M” jersey, on the ice the Gophers are just another Minnesota college hockey program.
Sure they are tied with Michigan (8-2) in the weak, six-team Big 10 and are above .500 for the season with a 13-12-0 record. But other issues are boiling under the surface. Continue reading Minnesota Meltdown
Foot Dragging Makes For Basketball Tournament Farce

The Washington Post had an article on the 18-1 SMU basketball program. They were the nation’s last unbeaten team through most of December until they lost on the road at Temple. Regardless of their final record, they will not be getting an invitation to the Big Dance in March. The Mustangs are banned from postseason play for having an assistant coach take on-line exams for a high school recruit. Coach Larry Brown was caught lying, too, and the cover-up was on. Brown was suspended for the first nine games by the NCAA for a lack of institutional control. Denver Earns Important, Hard-Fought Split at Miami

With a 5-3 win on Saturday night at Steve Cady Arena in Oxford, Ohio, the Denver Pioneers secured an important weekend split with the Miami University RedHawks (10-12-3, 5-9-2 NCHC) to improve their record to 13-8-5 (9-5-2 NCHC) on the season. Today’s Sights at Peter Barton Stadium
Pios Play South Dakota State Tough in 56-67 loss
This was a game that left Pioneer hoops fans in an optimistic mood and showed why this is a young team worth watching. A good crowd (3,020), the first of the season, created an energy that inspired the Pioneers (11-11) to hang tough against a veteran program. DU, playing against the senior laden, league leading South Dakota State Jackrabbits (18-5) fought toe to toe before the game slipped away in the final few minutes.
Joe Scott went to the bigger, more athletic lineup with C.J. Bobbitt at center, Marcus Byrd at the wing, and gave Thomas Neff, Jake Holtzmann and Jake Pemberton meaningful minutes. Denver Hockey’s Unsung Heroes

Following a sweep against the University of Minnesota-Duluth last weekend, Denver hockey returned recharged and refocused for the second half of the season.
DU’s series against Notre Dame to open 2016 exhibited the standard quality hockey performance Denver fans are accustomed to.
In the time since, Denver has comfortably positioned themselves third in the NCHC standings and in the Top 15 for both major NCAA Division 1 polls (USCHO and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine). Continue reading Denver Hockey’s Unsung Heroes
3rd Quarter Denver Hoops Report Card
DU finished the third quarter of their basketball season last night, 3-5. All eight games were against Summit Conference opponents. During that stretch, DU averaged 62.3 points per game while their opponents scored 68.6, a -6.3 margin.
