A promising #7 DU men’s basketball season began with hope. That promise was quickly followed by a key player exit and injuries, a number of excruciating losses and an end-of-season coaching mystery – capped by tonight’s quarterfinal blowout loss to St. Thomas in the Summit League Tournament quarterfinals. All eyes now shift to the uncertain future of a program visibly reeling and in search of answers. The loss was all the more disappointing to a #2 St. Thomas team that cannot qualify for the NCAA Tournament due to their elevation from DIII. Day 2: Denver Tumbles to 5th as Dartmouth Takes Team Lead
There is no easy way to say this. Thursday was a fatal day for Denver’s hope to earn another NCAA team title in 2025. It was a Nordic discipline, Classic, once again that placed DU in a deep hole. Denver women could only collect 10 points in Nordic Classical and the men, not much better, with 44 points as the Pioneers tumbled to 5th place. The home team, Dartmouth, took the overall team lead with 267.5 points. Denver trails the leader by 106.5 points. Colorado, Utah and Vermont stand between Dartmouth and DU, making the chances of a comeback nearly impossible. Continue reading Day 2: Denver Tumbles to 5th as Dartmouth Takes Team Lead
Day 1: Rask Wins NCAA Championship, Denver Sits in Second for Team Title
Here we are again at the NCAA 2025 Skiing Championships. Wednesday morning was the beginning of men’s and women’s alpine slalom at Dartmouth Skiway near Lyme Center, New Hampshire. Denver is sitting in second trailing those dreaded Colorado Buffs but there are still three days to go! Continue reading Day 1: Rask Wins NCAA Championship, Denver Sits in Second for Team Title
DU Men’s Basketball Faces Headwinds to Finally End NCAA Tournament Futility
Will DU men’s basketball (11-20, 5-11) ever get their “One Shining Moment” with a trip to the NCAA Tournament? It’s been 86 seasons, yet, strangely enough, this may be one of DU’s better chances under uncertain circumstances. Plagued by season-long injuries, a key departure, and a head coach mysteriously “on leave” with no public answers forthcoming, a wobbly DU program travels to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on Thursday against an equally fragile conference with no powerhouse team(s). You can argue that nearly any Summit League team can win the tournament and the conference’s autobid this season – including DU. Denver Lacrosse Sweeps, Outscoring Marist & Quinnipiac 32-12 on the Weekend
Against Marist Friday night, DU (4-2, 0-0) broke open a close game, 6-5 at half, to gallop to an 18-5 rout. Against Quinnipiac Sunday, the Pioneers and Bobcats were tied after the first quarter, 3-3, but Denver outscored the visitors the net three periods to win 14-7. DU Swamps South Dakota State, 78-62, Awaits Tournament Seeding
DU could have used this performance in Kansas City last week when they fell to the Roos, 64-56. Instead, they needed a win today at Hamilton Gym against South Dakota State and a loss by UMKC tonight to avoid the ‘dreaded play-in game’ at the Summit League Tournament next week. Now, they must wait and watch games to finish this evening to receive their final tournament seed. It was senior day for Pedro Sanvicente, Isaiah Addo-Ankrah and Ben Bowen. However, it was a ferocious defensive effort and freshman Sebastian Akins with a team-leading 17 points who controlled the second half to secure the final regular season win. Pioneers Inch Closer to Home Ice With 3-1 Win over St. Cloud State
You can probably count on only one hand the number of games since the end of October when the #6 Denver Pioneers (24-8-1, 13-7-1 NCHC) have looked like bona fide national contenders. But you can count tonight’s 3-1 victory at Magness Arena against an upset-seeking St. Cloud State Huskies (12-18-1, 5-15-1 NCHC) team among them. Denver outshot St. Cloud 3-1 and spent what felt like at least 75% of the game in the offensive zone. If not for a strong performance from Huskies goalie Isak Posch behind a well-structured defense, the Pioneers likely would have turned this one into a rout. DU suffers Critical loss to UMKC, 64-56
Three teams were battling for the final non-play-in game for the Summit League Tournament. A win against UMKC on the road in DU’s second-to-last regular season game would cement DU in the driver’s seat. Unfortunately, poor shooting, uneven officiating and the inability to get on a scoring run led to the 64-56 road loss. Continue reading DU suffers Critical loss to UMKC, 64-56
