Denver Opens Conference Play with a Sweep and Win

Denver men’s soccer (5-2-1, 1-0-0) traveled to Macomb, Illinois to play Western Illinois and pulled out a tough 2-1 win. 26 minutes into the first half, senior defender Jake Mecham got DU on the board. Stefan DeLeone buried a penalty kick ten minutes later for a 2-0 Denver lead. Denver controlled the pace of play the balance of the contest but Western Illinois countered with a goal of their own at 74:09. Denver held on for the win in their first conference match of the season and will likely be returning to the same field for the Summit League Tournament the second week in November. Soccer Teams Go 3-1, Volleyball 2-0 in Weekend Tilts

This weekend students returned to campus and 900 fans filled CIBER Field Friday night. The crowd witnessed a tight match between DU men’s soccer and Evansville. In the first half, Denver used a corner kick, initiated by Lukas Fisher, that Trevor Wright tucked into the net with four minutes remaining in the period. Denver controlled the second half, outshooting the Purple Aces 7-4 for the match, and held on for the 1-0 win. Continue reading Soccer Teams Go 3-1, Volleyball 2-0 in Weekend Tilts

Denver Goes 4-2-1 on the Weekend

Women’s soccer (5-1) split a pair of matches.  The Pios waxed Kansas State at DU soccer stadium, 3-1 Thursday evening. Denver had goals from three different players – Riley Baker, Natalie Beckman (of course) and Sydney Sharp. That makes back-to-back Power-Five wins against Utah (Pac-12 ) and Kansas State (Big 12). On Labor day, the Denver backline had a rough first half against the visiting Mustangs from Southern Methodist University (SMU), allowing three goals in a fifteen-minute span, to trail 3-0. In a strange game dominated by the Pios, Denver outshot the visitors 21-3 and 7-3 shots-on-goal (DU also had an ‘own goal) for the entire contest but Mustangs made all their shots count and won the game,  4-2. Puck Swami: DU Goes Hollywood, Stuns USC in Volleyball

I have a confession to make:

Like most of us spoiled Pioneer fans, women’s volleyball is not in my top handful of DU sports to watch. I know DU Coach Tom Hogan does a great job with what he has and the team is almost always a Summit League champion (or a contender for that title), but it seems like that’s been the ceiling on the program for a while now.  Beating South Dakota may be a good volleyball feat, but doing that is probably not going to move the needle very much at University and Asbury. To get average Joe fans like me interested in watching volleyball more regularly, DU probably needs to win beyond the Summit League level and become a national level, top-25 kind of program (as many of DU’s sports already are).
