Vanilla Broncos Can Play Denver Spoiler

Not THE Denver Broncos – the Western Michigan Broncos.

When Western Michigan rolls into Denver for this weekend’s 2-game series against DU, many fans are going to be discounting these Broncos. They sit at #28 in the RPI rankings, they are in the bottom half of D1 scoring and D1 defense, and their goalie(s) is not in the top 50 goaltenders in save percentage. Update: NCHC May Benefit from Arizona State’s First D1 Season

Their first season as a DI hockey program, the Arizona State Sun Devils are true road warriors with only five home games at Oceanside Ice Arena, their 41-year-old home rink which seats 800. They also have scheduled some games and tournaments at Gila River Arena in Glendale, home of the NHL’s Arizona Coyotes, and expect to play more games there in the coming seasons until they build their own on-campus arena. Looking at the stats for the 60 D1 hockey programs one gains valuable insights as well as unexpected surprises.

Wouldn’t it be great if Trevor Moore and Danton Heinen were leading the nation in scoring? Surely, DU, or any team for that matter, would be one of the top teams in the country with a tandem of national scoring leaders. Well, not so fast. Perfect 10 for DU Women Athletes

Many of DU’s athletes compete in relative anonymity. Still, this year has shown some eye opening individual and team performances from DU women.

  • Gymnast Nina McGee, performing a floor exercise at a home event this weekend at Magness Arena, scored a perfect 10.  The DU team went on to defeat Southern Utah and West Virginia.
  • Paige Bradley, a senior guard, scored her 1,000th Pioneer point on January 1st and then led the Pioneers to two consecutive victories this week over North Dakota State and IPFW. She scored a career high 31 against NDSU and chipped in 13 Saturday in an overtime home win.

Ice Age First Half Gives Mastodons Life, 64-65

This basketball game was not for the faint of heart Pioneer basketball fan – 3 for 17 from the 3-point line, 9 of 27 from the field, and trailing by double digits in rebounds – the Pioneers had a brutal first half. The Pios (9-8) dug a big hole against a good team, IPFW (14-3). Despite a second half rally and a brief DU lead, 58-57 with 3 minutes to go, the Pioneers could not hold on for the win. Mascot Controversy Continues to Rage

As temperatures plunge for the NFL Vikings – Seahawks wildcard game this Sunday, in Minneapolis, the response to former mascot Joe Juranitch has heated up. As reported by LetsGoDU earlier this week, Juranitich, who played the mascot ‘Ragnar the Viking’ for 21 years, received his unconditional release this fall after seeking a hefty pay raise from $1,500 per game to $20,000 per game. On a Fox pregame video prior to last weekend’s Viking-Greenbay game, Juranitich ditched his Viking helmet & horns and donned a cheesehead – enough to boil blood in Minnesota.  Continue reading Mascot Controversy Continues to Rage →
