DU Lacrosse Plays Strong Game Against Cornell, Fades in 4th Quarter 13-9

#16/17 Denver men’s lacrosse (3-0) returned to Peter Barton Stadium to face #4/5 Cornell (1-0) in a Saturday showdown of undefeated teams. Something had to give and it was Vornells skill and speed that prevailed.

Denver got first blood when Cornell transfer found twin.

Following two post shots by the Wolverines, Cody Malawsky opened the scoring with a fall-away away snipe into the Wolverine cage. DU won the following possession off the X and score a goal in traffic as Case Bruno lit the lamp, 2-0. At 6:25 of the first, Big Blue painted the upper left corner of the Denver cage, 2-1. Several minutes later, the Pioneers went on the break on a Michigan turnover. Chris Moravia took the feed and tucked the ball into the cage. A Denver long stick set up a goal by Cody Malawski. 4-1. At the end of the quarter, Michigan cut the deficit in half with a minute to go, 4-2.

Denver found the scoresheet early as Chris Merageas, on the doorstep of the goal, feathered the ball past Hunter Taylor, the Michigan goalie. With a man up, a diving Wolverine stuffed the goal past Grayson Manning, 5-3.

Denver Dodges Coyotes and Fouls in 90-70 Win Over South Dakota

It is hard to believe but Denver men’s basketball (14-15, 7-7) season entered its final two home conference games, starting Thursday night with South Dakota. In a game loaded with fouls, Denver needed to shoot lights out – and they did. Denver shot 47% from the field, 9 of 17 from downtown, and 23 of 25 from the charity stripe to drop the Coyotes. Carson Johnson was lethal down the stretch, finishing with 32 points and 3 assists. Continue reading Denver Dodges Coyotes and Fouls in 90-70 Win Over South Dakota

#17 Denver women’s lacrosse (3-0) opened its home campaign Thursday against the Towson Tigers, following a successful West Coast road swing over the weekend. Late Surge Earns Denver a 3-1 Victory Over Omaha

DU men’s hockey (19-11-3, 15-6-1) got off to yet another slow start, as neither Denver nor Omaha could scratch the scoresheet. Denver got off 15 shots, 8 on target, but came up empty-handed against goaltender Simon Latkoczy. Denver also doubled up the Mavs on faceoffs, 11-5. Both teams had a power play opportunity, but zilch to show for the first 20 minutes of effort. Continue reading Late Surge Earns Denver a 3-1 Victory Over Omaha

Pioneers Overcome Slow Start to Top Omaha Mavericks, 5-2

All too often this season, the #8 Denver Pioneers (18-11-3, 14-6-1 NCHC) have put themselves behind the eight-ball with frequent slow starts. It was a big part of the reason why they muddled through the middle part of the season with only one win in seven tries, and coming off a five-game unbeaten streak, it looked like their slow-starting woes were going to strike again as they allowed the Omaha Mavericks (10-19-0, 6-13-0 NCHC) to score first on an early power play at Baxter Arena in game one of the Pioneers’ penultimate series of the regular season. But after one dominant shift halfway through the second period, DU flipped the script, dominated the remaining 30 minutes of the game, and cruised to a 5-2 road victory. The Pioneers, who have now clinched home ice advantage for at least the NCHC Tournament quarterfinals, have three regular-season games remaining. Big 12 Gymnastics Conference Suddenly Down to Six Teams

Iowa State’s meet at Magness on February 1st turned out to be their last of the season. Five days after the Cyclone’s loss to DU, and just one day before their next scheduled competition, ISU head coach Ashley Miles Greig announced, “At this time, we do not have enough student-athletes available to safely field a team against West Virginia, and regrettably must cancel this competition.” Then even more shockingly, on February 8th, Iowa State canceled the entire remainder of their 2026 season. Pioneers Take Care Of Business vs. Tigers to Earn 5-Point Weekend

Friday night’s shootout victory in Colorado Springs, the game that clinched the Gold Pan for DU, provided all the drama the #8 Denver Pioneers (17-11-3, 13-6-1 NCHC) had to worry about this weekend. In game two against the Colorado College Tigers (11-13-4, 5-9-4 NCHC) in Denver, the Pioneers never trailed and coasted to a 4-1 victory, which earned them a five-point weekend to stay two points back of first-place North Dakota. After recording just one win in an eight-game stretch from December 13 to January 23, the Pioneers are now on a five-game unbeaten streak, dating back to the 6-0 drubbing of St. Cloud State two weeks ago.
