With a 5-3 win on Saturday night at Steve Cady Arena in Oxford, Ohio, the Denver Pioneers secured an important weekend split with the Miami University RedHawks (10-12-3, 5-9-2 NCHC) to improve their record to 13-8-5 (9-5-2 NCHC) on the season. Following a sweep against the University of Minnesota-Duluth last weekend, Denver hockey returned recharged and refocused for the second half of the season.
DU’s series against Notre Dame to open 2016 exhibited the standard quality hockey performance Denver fans are accustomed to.
In the time since, Denver has comfortably positioned themselves third in the NCHC standings and in the Top 15 for both major NCAA Division 1 polls (USCHO and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine). Continue reading Denver Hockey’s Unsung Heroes
DU finished the third quarter of their basketball season last night, 3-5. All eight games were against Summit Conference opponents. During that stretch, DU averaged 62.3 points per game while their opponents scored 68.6, a -6.3 margin.
Quarter 3 Evaluation Period: Period: South Dakota State through South Dakota
After scoring 8 goals in the first quarter, the Denver Pioneers lacrosse team held off the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays to win 14-10 in their final exhibition game of the 2016 season. While this game didn’t officially matter, Bill Tierney and his staff has a lot to talk about and build on heading into the season opener at Air Force on February 13th. It is a near miracle DU is playing .500 ball at 10-10 heading into tonight’s game against South Dakota at Magness Arena.
This is a scrappy bunch that leaves everything on the floor but their chance of winning falls to almost zero without 50+% shooting from the floor and beyond the arc while winning the turnover and steal battle. With a -7.6 rebound differential, the Pioneers have slid to 334 out of 346 D-1 programs, putting a lot of pressure on a young team on both ends of the floor. Continue reading Rebound Woes Haunt Team

With 7.8 seconds left and the score sitting at 2-1 in favor of the University of Denver Pioneres, three Minnesota-Duluth players, on each end of the ice, starting punching and tackling DU players. In true hockey form, DU players retaliated and the game was one punch away from a benches clearing brawl.
In the end, Denver won the game by a score of 2-1 and secured a very important sweep to put some more distance between them and the Bulldogs. For the first time since the New Year, the University of Denver couldn’t get anything going in the first period. After withstanding an early barrage by the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs in which DU starting goalie Tanner Jaillet gave up 2 goals, the Pioneers settled down and came back to win.
