With a 5-3 win on Saturday night at Steve Cady Arena in Oxford, Ohio, the Denver Pioneers secured an important weekend split with the Miami University RedHawks (10-12-3, 5-9-2 NCHC) to improve their record to 13-8-5 (9-5-2 NCHC) on the season. Following a sweep against the University of Minnesota-Duluth last weekend, Denver hockey returned recharged and refocused for the second half of the season.
DU’s series against Notre Dame to open 2016 exhibited the standard quality hockey performance Denver fans are accustomed to.

After scoring 8 goals in the first quarter, the Denver Pioneers lacrosse team held off the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays to win 14-10 in their final exhibition game of the 2016 season. While this game didn’t officially matter, Bill Tierney and his staff has a lot to talk about and build on heading into the season opener at Air Force on February 13th. With 7.8 seconds left and the score sitting at 2-1 in favor of the University of Denver Pioneres, three Minnesota-Duluth players, on each end of the ice, starting punching and tackling DU players. In true hockey form, DU players retaliated and the game was one punch away from a benches clearing brawl.
In the end, Denver won the game by a score of 2-1 and secured a very important sweep to put some more distance between them and the Bulldogs. For the first time since the New Year, the University of Denver couldn’t get anything going in the first period. After withstanding an early barrage by the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs in which DU starting goalie Tanner Jaillet gave up 2 goals, the Pioneers settled down and came back to win. DU’s ski team has already generated a successful start to their 2016 season with podium finishes from a variety of skiers. Both the Alpine and Nordic ski teams have produced top results in the races they’ve competed in so far. After finishing second at the NCAA Championships last year, behind in-state rival University of Colorado-Boulder, the Pios are looking to reclaim the title to add to their national record of 22 NCAA Championship titles.
