In American Hero fashion, Troy Terry scored the game-winning goal and his second of the night beating Ryan Larkin five-hole to contribute to the [2/2] University of Denver Pioneers 5-2 victory and weekend sweep over the [NR/NR] Miami-Ohio [Miami] RedHawks. Earning their road, first in-conference sweep after last night’s 5-2 win at Steve Cady Arena, this momentum is vital with the conference playing closing and the NCHC Playoffs and the NCAA Tournament approaching.
Down by a goal after getting scored on four minutes into the opening frame, Terry converted his first goal on the power play. Terry dangled past three Redhawks before depositing the puck past Larkin to put Denver on the board with 12:56 remaining in the first period.
Senior forward Emil Romig doubled Denver’s lead scoring in transition 42 seconds later. Linemate sophomore Colin Staub backhanded a pass in the neutral zone to Romig who sent a wrist shot past Larkin.
During the second period, the Redhawks tied the score 2-2 on the power play after senior defenseman Matt VanVoorhis was assessed with interference. Terry regained Denver’s lead with his second goal of the night.
Five minutes into the final frame, Staub chased a puck down and fed Romig in the slot whose go-ahead strike marked his second goal of the night and doubled Denver up 4-2.
With five minutes remaining in regulation, junior defenseman Tariq Hammond joined the rush sending a wrist-shot past Larkin earning his fourth career goal and securing the 5-2 victory over Miami.
Denver (21-6-4, 13-3-3) returns to Magness Arena next weekend [Feb. 24 and 25] to host St. Cloud St.
The Pios are the best team in the country right now for my money. Seven straight NCHC wins now, with all four lines contributing. This team moves the puck better than any DU team since 2005, with Butcher running the show from the blue line. Everybody is buying in.

DU looked awesome last night. OK, Miami isn’t great this year, but still. The puck movement. The skill from Butcher, Terry, and Borgstrom. The contributions of guys like Romig, Janssen and others. Jaillett….putting up great numbers and playing very well. And the fact the Gambrell still has room to take his game to another level bodes well, too. (I wonder if he is still banged up.) I like this team. Good job, Monty.
