DU women’s soccer traveled to Fargo, North Dakota for the Summit League playoffs. After finishing 5-2 in league play, Denver (#2 seed) was tied with Oral Roberts (#3 seed) and North Dakota State (#4), all three with two league losses. South Dakota State is the #1 seed with a 7-0 mark.
In blustery, freezing temperatures in Fargo, North Dakota senior Jessie Dancy scored Denver’s first goal one minute into the contest against Oral Roberts University. Her goal was assisted by senior forward Angelica Pacheco. That goal held up the other 89 minutes for the win. ORU had several good opportunities to score the equalizer but failed to capitalize.
DU held the possession advantage in play during the first half and led shots-on-goal 4-1.
The wind picked up and the temperatures continued to drop in the second half. Denver had the better of possessions but the pressing Golden Eagles did create several dangerous scoring opportunities and ended the game with a 5-4 SOG advantage. ORU’s best opportunity came on a fast break down the left flank and shot which hit the crossbar at 17:10.
DU’s last conference championship and NCAA appearance was the 2013 season.
Yesterday, Denver’s Dancy was awarded the Summit Leagues Offensive Player of the Year.
DU’s opponent will be #4 seed North Dakota State (8-10 overall, 5-2 Summit) who upset #1 seed South Dakota State 2-0 following DU’s match. The Summit League championship game will be held on Saturday 11:00 am MT.
