We already told you about the signing of hot shooting guard Jase Townsend and 6’8″ power forward Javonni Bickham – DU’s first two signed basketball recruits for the 2018-2019 season. With a mid-week bye this week for Pioneer basketball now is the perfect time to review Denver’s most recent three additional signees along with some comments about each recruit from head coach Rodney Billups. Arizona State moves closer to arena deal, conference affiliation

College Hockey News reported that ASU is nearing approval of a 5,000 seat hockey arena as part of a larger project in which Wells Fargo Arena, home to several of ASU’s NCAA teams including men’s and women’s basketball, has played since 1974. The hockey rink would reportedly be located next to the basketball arena and take space which is currently used for parking and tailgating for ASU football.

ASU currently plays at Oceanside Ice Arena in Tempe, which has a maximum capacity of 800.  Continue reading Arizona State moves closer to arena deal, conference affiliation

Senior Jake Pemberton leads resurgent Denver Men’s Hoops squad

In case you missed it, DU men’s basketball (10-12 overall, 4-4 Summit) thrashed league-leading South Dakota at Magness Arena by 16 points Saturday afternoon, 84-68.

Joe Rosga scored Denver’s first 13 points and Daniel Amigo did his usual damage on both the offensive and defensive end. But, it came as little surprise to those who watched the game that senior Jake Pemberton was the player of the game – and a key player going forward as Denver has won three of their past four league games. Quick Summary – DU -UND Tie (again) 1-1

Photo: Courtesy of Denver Athletics

Denver faced a wounded opponent but could not put them away in a gritty and, sometimes, listless 1-1 tie.

UND played without its top two centermen — juniors Rhett Gardner and Nick Jones along with defenseman Gabe Bast and suspended Cole Smith. DU’s Griffin Mendel replaced Adam Plant. With only 11 forwards available for the game, UND moved defenseman Casey Johnson to forward for the first time in his college career.

First Period

  • Early in the contest, DU outshot UND 6-0 and held the fighting hawks without a shot until 13:52
  • DU Freshman Kohen Olischefski beat UND goalie Can Johnson for a sloppy goal at 7:21

Second Period

  • UND controlled possession and tempo in the second period
  • The Fighting Hawks Christian Wolainin tied the game with a power-play goal at 9:36
  • The Pioneers offense could not get untracked during the period

Third Period

  • Scoreless with few ‘Grade A’ scoring chances on either side
  • A late Pioneer penalty gave the Fighting Hawks opportunities and carried over to the first OT period but no damage done

OT

  • Scoreless in first overtime with few opportunities on either side
  • Second OT, Denver earned two conference points on a 3-on-3 goal by DU defenseman Ian Mitchell in a 2-on-1 rush at 1:19.

Summary
DU had a chance to put away a wounded, reeling opponent but could only muster 23 shots on goal to 22 for UND. By holding off Denver, the Fighting Hawks moved into a tie for 3rd place and must see this series as a ‘win’ heading into a bye week and the return of injured players for the final 8-game Stretch. Denver leaves Grand Forks with a solid 4 points but an empty feeling of what might have been – with the sudden absence of scoring – especially from stars Troy Terry, Dylan Gambrell and Henrik Borgstrom.

Denver Picks Up Huge Win Over South Dakota, 84-68

It was an opportunity for their biggest win of the season and the Denver Pioneers took advantage of it. They rode a hot start and incredible performances to an almost easy 84-68 win. South Dakota did make a few runs but for the most part Denver just outplayed them and certainly looked like the better team on this day. I asked Coach Billups how a win like this affects the team’s confidence the rest of the way and he said “If we can beat arguably the best team in the conference on our home floor, we can beat anybody. We’ve got some tough games ahead, we’ve got to take this show on the road against Fort Wayne next Saturday but this gives us the confidence to push through.”

The Denver-North Dakota rivalry from between the pipes

There are no shortage of similarities when comparing two of college hockey’s most renowned programs: the University of Denver (DU) Pioneers and the University of North Dakota (UND) Fighting Hawks. From the number of national championships [tied with eight] to Hobey Baker Award recipients [each have two] to program successes and line pairings, the two have paralleled and contested one another for decades. The earliest contention was when the Pioneers defeated the Fighting Hawks 6-2 in the 1958 national title game to claim the program’s first championship. The following season, UND returned to the championship game and edged Michigan State 4-3 in overtime.  Continue reading The Denver-North Dakota rivalry from between the pipes

Denver Comes Up Big Late, Beats Western Illinois 70-58

The Denver PIoneers picked up a nice 12 point win over Western Illinois at Magness Arena on Thursday night. Despite a strong start from Denver, Western Illinois would make things close and the game was as tight as a 1 point Denver lead with 6:30 to go, but the Pios would get a layup 12 seconds later to extend the lead and they never looked back from there. It was a promising return to Magness after a good road trip that was almost great and has Denver sitting at 3-4 in the Summit League, only a half game out of a third place tie.

The No. 4 Pioneers travel to Grand Forks North Dakota to take on the No. 11 Fighting Hawks in their second series of the season

After a sweep of the Nebraska Omaha Mavericks last weekend, it looks as though Denver is back to playing Pioneer hockey.  Goaltender Tanner Jaillet put the team on his back and recorded two consecutive shutouts earning himself the NCAA’s second star of the week.  Freshman Ian Mitchell scored a goal and four assists making him the NCHC’s player of the week.  And Mr. Borgström made the highlight reel once again.
