Stickney touts Kalamazoo in Michigan article

“My favorite road trip of the year”, says Jay Stickney broadcaster for the University of Denver hockey team of his annual trip to southwestern Michigan. “If I didn’t have major business interests in Denver, I’d live in Kalamazoo.”

In an interview with Pure Michigan: The Magazine, Stickney talks all things Kalamazoo.  Here are some quotes from the article:

Kalamazoo history: “Kalamazoo is the home to Gibson guitars. Just think, without Gibson, Keith Richards might be playing the drums.”

His favorite watering hole? “It started with Gwoz (former head coach George Gwozdecky). He took me to Old Dog Bar in the 2013-14 season following a 4-2 loss. We did Jager shots. I woke up next morning in the bathtub in my hotel room, with no shirt on. The tub is full of ice. There’s a note taped to the wall saying, “Call 911 if you want to live – your liver has been harvested.” I called 911, and the operator asks me to touch my back – and nothing. George got me!”

Kalamazoo business; “Most people don’t know that Upjohn (later acquired by Pfizer) is headquartered in Kalamazoo. They developed ibuprofen. When you are fierce and workout as hard as I do, it’s nice to be close to the source.”

The name Kalamazoo: “As a student of linguistics, I know that the Kalamazoo name is derived from the Potawatomi tribe but the word’s meaning is not clear. Some historians think it means boiling water,  mirage or reflecting river.  As for me, it stands for “cold as ****”.

Engineering at Western Michigan: “Western Michigan University offers an elite engineering program. I could have pursued that course of study if I wanted to but as Confucius says, ‘Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life’… Plus, I’m terrible at math, design, and spatial relationships.”

On what he is going to do in Kalamazoo this season with new head coach David Carle. “We’ll enjoy the food and local culture. Maybe go to the Black Owl Cafe for some lattes. But, I can assure you – we are not going to the Old Dog Bar.”

Next up, #4 Denver faces #14 Western Michigan at Lawson Arena in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Puck drop is set for 5:05 p.m. MT on Friday and Saturday.

Note:  The University of Denver at Colorado College hockey game that was postponed last Friday, Jan. 18, will now be played on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at the Broadmoor World Arena, beginning at 7 p.m. MT

  1. In a world full of sound-alike and look-alike Ken dolls in sports broadcasting, we are lucky to have a former comedian like Jay in our broadcast booth. Smooth? No.
    Excitable? Yes.
    Funny? Hilarious.
    Memorable? Always.

  2. Kalamazoo is a cool place. Good college town, nice people, and only 45 minutes or so from Lake Michigan. But the best reason to visit? Bell’s Brewery. It’s an awesome brewery in a state that has some really good craft brews. Their Two-Hearted Ale is a slice of heaven. Anyone who visits Kzoo has to stop at Bell’s.
