As expected, the NCAA Division I Ice Hockey Committee assigned the eighth-seeded University of Denver Pioneers with a trip to the West Regional in Fargo, North Dakota, where DU will host a first-round rematch with ninth-seeded Ohio State University from the Big 10, the school that ended DU’s 2018 season with a 5-1 NCAA second round regional drubbing in Allentown, Pa.
DU, the third-place team in the NCHC, will face OSU at 2 pm MT on Friday, March 29th . The game can be seen live on ESPNU. As the eighth-seed, DU will be the home team in Fargo and will have last line change.
The committee elected to seed the tournament with straight bracket integrity (#1 plays #16, #2 plays #15 etc.)according to each team’s Pairwise ranking this year and did not move any team for attendance reasons.
If the Pioneers are able to avenge last year’s loss to the Buckeyes next week, DU will then advance to face the winner of the other Fargo Regional game between overall top-seeded St. Cloud State, (the NCHC Penrose Cup Champion) and #16 seed American International College, the Atlantic Hockey Champion. That regional final game would be played on Saturday, March 30th at 7 pm MT and is also televised nationally on ESPNU.
Should the Pioneers win both games in Fargo, DU would advance to the NCAA Frozen Four in Buffalo N.Y., which is scheduled to begin on April 11th, 2019.
