#12 Denver men’s (9-4, 4-1) and #15 women’s lacrosse (12-2, 4-0) completed a rare regular season Championship sweep on the same day Friday. Both teams earned their regular season titles in different ways.

The women earned a convincing 14-8 win against the Villanova Wildcats. DU ran out to a 7-3 lead in the first half and coasted to victory. DU’s Quintin Hoch-Bullen and Eliza Radochonski led the Pioneers with three goals each against the Wildcats en route to the crown.

With the win, Denver women’s lacrosse become the 2019 BIG EAST Regular Season Champions for the first time in program history.

The men crafted a come-from-behind victory at Marquette after falling behind 5-1 in the first quarter. However, four goals in the 2nd and 3rd quarters gave Denver a 1-point lead and they held on thru the final scoreless quarter to win 9-8. Denver used a pair of goals from Austin French, Teddy Sullivan and Ethan Walker in securing the road win at Marquette.

Villanova plays Providence tomorrow afternoon and, with a win, has a chance to tie Denver with a 4-1 BIG EAST record and earn a co-championship. However, with a win,  the Wildcats would host next season’s BIG EAST Tournament at home based on an earlier win this season against Denver. If Villanova falls, DU would win the title outright and host again next season. This is Denver’s sixth straight BIG EAST championship.

Denver men host the BIG EAST Tournament starting this Thursday, May 2nd and Saturday the 4th at Peter Barton Stadium. DU women’s lacrosse will travel to Milwaukee to defend their newly earned regular season title the same dates.

  1. Great to see DU come out with a couple of Big East reg season titles on the road. The women’s team looks like the one with the better chance to go further in the postseason this year, at least in my eyes.. Number one defense, good scoring depth and terrific goaltending make this probably the best DU women’s team Liza Kelly has had at DU and they have been dominating opponents of late. This might be the year DU could go beyond the Sweet 16 with the right draw…

The men’s team is still an inconsistent adventure. You knew Marquette was playing for its season tonight, and DU seemed a bit unprepared when the Golden Eagles were punching DU in the mouth with a 5 -1 lead. Then DU woke up and took over the the game only to let MU back in it late. At least DU held on to win and will be home for the Big East Tourney this year. Need to make the most of it, because I doubt DU goes dancing without winning the Big East Tourney.

Since Providence upset Villanova on Saturday the 27th, the DU men won the Big East regular season outright, in advance of next weekend’s Big East Tournament at DU. The top seeded Pios will play #4 Villanova on Thursday night in the second semifinal, while Providence will face Georgetown in the opening semi-final at DU onThursday. The two semi-final winners then advance to Saturday’s Big East title game, with the berth to the NCAA tournament on the line.
