A fast moving winter storm dumped 4-5 inches of snow in Denver Thursday so the women’s Denver (5-4-3, 1-0-1) versus Western Illinois (6-6-1, 2-1-0 Summit League) soccer match was moved to the Diane Wendt complex’s artificial turf. The match was played in 20 degree temperatures but the Pioneers heated up with two goals in the first half, en route to a 3-0 victory. The Pioneers dominated the frosty evening with 9 shots-on-goal to the Leathernecks 0.
Despite their dominance, DU did not find net until Natalie Beckman found the back of the net at 26:30 of the first half on an unassisted goal. Then, shortly before the break, Beckman delivered again on a penalty kick to make the score 2-0 at the 36:13 mark.
In the second half, Meg Halverson added the final insurance goal (46:21) with assists from Samantha feller and Natalie Beckman to make it 3-0. DU controlled play all night long with a 23-5 shot advantage. Brittany Wilson was in goal for the Pioneers and was credited with the shutout.
DU women’s soccer’s next match is Thursday, October 17th versus the Omaha Mavericks in Omaha.
