Denver Edges Miami, 3-2

Maybe Denver (16-4-5, 6-3-4) got caught looking ahead to a pair of upcoming games against Minnesota Duluth and North Dakota. Or, maybe it was just the Redhawks night early. Friday evening the Miami Redhawks took a 2-0 lead in the first period at Steve Cady Arena in Oxford, Ohio. But the Pioneers rallied for three consecutive goals and held on for a 3-2 win.

Denver trailed 2-0 in the first period but Kohen Olischefski reeled off power-play goals in the first and second periods to draw the score even, 2-2.

Going into the final period, DU’s Griffin Mendel trickled a sloppy goal past Miami goalkeeper Ryan Larkin with 6:15 remaining in the final period to take a 3-2 lead. The Redhawks pulled their goalie in the final minutes but DU’s defense held on for the win.

DU now has a 10-game unbeaten streak. Magnus Chrona with the win for the Pioneers.

The teams face off again Saturday night at 5:05 MT. A more complete series recap will be posted Sunday morning.

  1. No fans at game due to semester break Kids in Miami. A win over Larkin in goal is always difficult.

  2. Gutty effort by the Pios after a sloppy defensive start. Denver controlled the puck possession for the most part for 75% of the game, and got the win they deserved. Some really nice skating and cycling for DU on a Miami defense that had a hard time keeping up.

I would like to see the Pios clean up the slow starts so they aren’t always playing from behind. DU has a tough -7 goal differential in the first period this year. Good to see the PP moving into a solid threat, and to see Olischefski getting rewarded for getting to the net front.
