Denver (2-19, 1-13) ended the season with a single win in conference play. DU dropped their final contest of a shortened season, 80-76, to the Omaha Mavericks (5-19, 3-11) and will be left at home for the Summit League Tournament in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Denver trailed 30-24 at half but, as usual, the Pioneers made a push in the second half. A pair of Kobey Lam free throws gave DU a 3-point lead late, 70-67, with 2:40 remaining. The Mavericks made a push of their own and built a three-point lead, 74-71, with 45 seconds remaining. A Jase Townsend jumper missed the mark and UNO got the carom and was fouled. After two made free throws by UNO, DU drew within 2 points with 15 seconds remaining but a Taelyr Gatlin turnover and two free throws by UNO ended the game, 80-76.
Jase Townsend had 22 points for DU. Robert Jones had a big game with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 5 blocks – his best game of the season.
A number of questions face the DU men’s basketball heading into the early off-season.
