A couple of months ago, TD Ierlan, the greatest faceoff specialist in men’s collegiate lacrosse, announced his plans to transfer to Denver and join his former Yale teammates, Jackson Morrill and Lucas Cotler. Just this morning, according to US Lacrosse Magazine, Ierlan himself confirmed that he has been accepted at the University of Denver and will be eligible to play against Villanova next Sunday. The program has not yet confirmed the transfer, however. As a reminder for those who forgot what the quarter system is, this transfer is made possible by Denver’s academic system. Winter Quarter ends on Friday which means Ierlan’s transfer for academic purposes will be made official when the new academic term ‘begins’ Saturday.
The ninth-ranked Pioneers have been playing great lacrosse since dropping two-straight on the road to then-#1 Duke and now-#1 North Carolina. Since then, Denver topped in-state rival Air Force before steamrolling its way through the early part of its BIG EAST portion of the schedule, going 3-0 with victories over Marquette (10-9), Providence (23-10), and St. John’s (20-6). Meanwhile, current faceoff specialist Alec Stathakis has had a great season already, winning 108 of 164 total faceoffs this year (65.9%) including 65 of 88 (73.9%) in his last four games.
It will be interesting to watch how Ierlan fits into Bill Tierney’s plans for the rest of the season and whether Ierlan will take the starting job outright from Stathakis or if he plans to employ a kind of faceoff tandem between two of the best faceoff specialists men’s college lacrosse has to offer this year. But in the meantime, before Ierlan can officially play next weekend, Denver still has a massive matchup against BIG EAST rival and top-five foe #4 Georgetown tomorrow afternoon, postponed from Saturday due to the slow-arriving blizzard that hammered the state yesterday.
On Wednesday morning, the Denver Men’s Lacrosse program officially confirmed that TD Ierlan will be joining the team on Saturday ahead of Sunday’s originally-scheduled and now-postponed matchup at Villanova:
TD Ierlan has cleared the NCAA compliance and transfer protocols and has been admitted to the University of Denver. He will be eligible to join team activities Saturday ahead of the Pioneers game at Villanova (Sunday/9 a.m. MT). #PioneerTogether https://t.co/aQj8qXxwoo
