Weekend Update: Pioneers Continue Winning Ways

This past weekend, DU Women’s Lacrosse (12-1, 10-0) celebrated senior day and swept Villanova 18-10 and 19-9 to complete an undefeated BIG EAST regular season 10-0. The Pioneers will advance to the conference tournament as the #1 seed. But before then, they will have the opportunity to avenge their only loss of the season this Thursday at Peter Barton Stadium against the CU Buffs in non-conference play.

We told you about Denver men’s lacrosse (10-3, 8-1) and their dominant victory against St. John’s Saturday. That set’s up a huge make-up game Wednesday at 10:00 am against Villanova on the road. If Denver wins, they will finish tied with Georgetown atop the BIG EAST standings but hold the tiebreaker due to goal differential in head-to-head games. Should Denver beat Villanova, the Pioneers will enter the BIG EAST Tournament as the #1 seed.

DU women’s golf sits in a solid first place heading into the third and final day of the Summit League Championships in Newton, Kansas. Denver has three golfers vying for medalist honors with – Anna Zanusso, Mary Weinstein, and Alyson Bean sitting tied for second in the standings.

Women’s tennis (12-3, 8-0) blanked South Dakota to wrap up the Summit League regular-season title. Denver hosts the Summit League Conference Championships at Denver Tennis Park beginning Friday at 3:00 pm MT. DU men’s Tennis (14-3, 5-0) also finished the regular season undefeated the prior weekend and host the conference tournament at Denver Tennis Park this Friday beginning at 9:00 am against South Dakota.

To recap, this will be a busy week for Denver student-athletes as the sports calendar hits the stretch run. Monday, women’s golf completes their final round at the Summit League Conference Championships. In first-round NCAA Tournament play, Denver women’s soccer (16-2-1, 14-1-1) takes on Loyola-Chicago ((8-1-1, 6-1-1) on Tuesday in Matthews, North Carolina at 1:00 pm MT. Denver men’s lacrosse travels to Villanova at 10:00 am Wednesday. Denver women’s lacrosse hosts its regular-season finale against CU at 7:00 pm Thursday at Peter Barton Stadium. Finally, the men’s and women’s Summit League tennis championships will be contested at Denver Tennis Park Friday and Saturday.

  1. Golf lead only 3 shots. Must hang on to earn NCAA AQ. Win or go fishing week for most teams. I suspect we will do pretty well. Women’s soccer has toughest week.
