It was a bittersweet several days for DU athletes and fans this week as Denver competed in season-ending competitions which, ultimately, were decided in their opponents’ favor. This is a reminder to all of us why athletic competitions can provide great exhilaration as well as gut-wrenching disappointment which oftentimes hinge on a single moment. In each case, Denver was positioned for success but came up just short.

Denver Volleyball Drops Summit League Title Match in Marathon Tilt
Clearly, the Pioneers (14-3) and the Coyotes (16-6, 13-3) were the class of the Summit League this season and it was fitting that the two teams met to determine the best conference team with the winner going to the NCAA Tournament. It was also appropriate that the Denver and South Dakota Summit League Volleyball Championship match went to a fifth and deciding set between two evenly matched squads. Denver took the first two games of the match, one in extra points. South Dakota counterpunched with two straight games, both in extra points. Of course, the deciding game went to extra points as well, 14-12, South Dakota.

Pioneers Remain Unbeaten in BIG EAST Behind Ethan Walker’s Record-Breaking Performance
There is a new name at the top of the Denver Men’s Lacrosse all-time points leaderboard. With a goal near the end of the first half against the Marquette Golden Eagles (1-6, 0-5 BIG EAST), Ethan Walker officially passed Wes Berg on DU’s all-time points list with his 256th of his storied career as a Pioneer. Thanks to that goal, two hat tricks from Jack Hannah and JJ Sillstrop, and an impressive 8-save, 61.5% performance by goaltender Jack Thompson, the Pioneers (8-2, 6-0 BIG EAST) beat the Golden Eagles 16-6 at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium on a picturesque early spring Saturday afternoon in Denver. Denver Men’s Basketball Hit Hard by Portal Exits
How can it possibly get worse for a 2-19 basketball team? New coach Jeff Wulbrun faces an uphill battle with DU starters being plucked from the hoops transfer portal. So far, DU’s three top scorers from this past season have left the program and two more players are in the portal with the intention to transfer. Day 2 Tracker: Zanusso Barely Misses Cut
Temperatures were in the 50’s and clear skies when play began today at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. The first round was completed by golfers who faced Wednesday’s rain delay and the second round was completed by all the golfers on Thursday. In the end, a mere two strokes stood between DU sophomore Anna Zanusso and making the cut.
