BIG EAST Champion Denver to Face Familiar Foe in NCAA Tournament

Denver Women’s Lacrosse, champions of the BIG EAST, plays Pac-12 champion Stanford (11-0, 7-0) in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Tournament with the winner advancing to face #2 Northwestern. The teams are familiar foes as former members of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF).  Denver is 12-18 all-time against the Cardinal.

The women’s team will travel to Evanston, Illinois for their first-round (and potentially second round) matchup on Friday, May 14 at 4:00 pm MT. Denver topped UConn 13-7 in the BIG EAST Championship and finished with a 15-1 record with their lone loss coming against in-state rival Colorado to open the season. It was their first time the DU women the BIG EAST Tournament. It is a tough NCAA draw for Denver, though, facing an undefeated Stanford and then national powerhouse #2 seed Northwestern if they advance. Northwestern has won seven national championships including five in a row from 2005 through 2009 and back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2012.

  1. Very tough draw indeed in a 29-team tourney. DU was ranked #13 coming into this week, Stanford was #12. Would have liked to see DU get to play some team in the #15-#17 range…

Well, it’s the NCAA Tourney. If the Pios play like they did vs UConn by getting better as the game went on, they can beat Stanford. As for playing our sister school, Northwestern, at Evanston, that’s pretty tough gig. Winner gets an autographed photo of John Evans….;0
