Mullins & Lukic Lead Denver to 85-74 Win Over CCU

It wasn’t an easy win for the Denver Pioneers (9-3) at Hamilton Gym in a trap game sandwiched between UCLA and their first conference test coming up against Omaha on the road.  Denver was knotted with Colorado Christian, 38-38, at halftime. In the final 20 minutes, the Pioneers were led by Marko Lukic and freshman Justin Mullins for the win. Mullins finished with 23 points and 4 steals while Lukic finished with 18 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Coach Jeff Wulbrun was relieved and frustrated with parts of the game, especially defense. “We didn’t play our best but a win is a win.”  Continue reading Mullins & Lukic Lead Denver to 85-74 Win Over CCU

Denver Hockey Road Trip Recap: Pioneers Earn Two Comeback OT Victories in Duluth

Winning in the NCHC, especially on the road, is an extremely hard thing to do, regardless of the opponent. Add in the fact that Duluth, Minnesota has historically been a difficult place to play and you have what could have been a rough weekend for the top-ranked Denver Pioneers (14-4-0, 8-2-0 NCHC). Instead, thanks to two gritty efforts, Denver erased a two-goal deficit on Friday night to earn a 3-2 overtime victory and come back from two separate one-goal deficits on Saturday to earn their second-straight overtime victory over the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs (8-10-0, 4-6-0 NCHC) at AMSOIL Arena. Denver Wins Again in Overtime to Take Four of Six Points in Duluth

It was another extremely close road game for the #1 Denver Pioneers (14-4-0, 8-2-0 NCHC) but thanks to a highlight-reel save from Magnus Chrona and freshman Aidan Thompson’s overtime goal, they earned their second straight overtime victory over the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs (8-10-0, 4-6-0 NCHC) with a 4-3 nail biter. This time, though, there was no goaltender interference controversy and the Pios head home to Denver with four more points and three points clear of second-place St. Cloud State, who was shut out by last-place Miami, 5-0. Pioneers Erase Two-Goal Deficit, Come Back to Beat Bulldogs in Overtime

The #1 Denver Pioneers (13-4-0, 7-2-0 NCHC) traveled to Duluth, Minnesota, a city where they have not played particularly well historically, and promptly spotted the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs (8-9-0, 4-5-0 NCHC) a 2-0 lead. Dominic James and Ben Steeves each scored on Sean Behrens’ two first-period penalties – holding then tripping – to give the PK unit an inauspicious start to the weekend. But Massimo Rizzo responded with under two minutes left in the opening frame with a power-play goal of his own off of a beauty of a pass from goaltender Magnus Chrona to cut the deficit to one entering the first intermission. Hornets Sting Denver in OT, 87-85

Denver (8-2)  went to Sacramento (4-5) with revenge on their minds following a 73-69 defeat at Hamilton Gym several weeks earlier to the same team. The Hornets 7’1″ Callum McRae had a field day with 20 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and a block in Denver. While Wednesday night’s game could have gone either way,  it was Sac State’s Zach Chappel who nailed 24 points, hit a jumper with 5 seconds left to send the game to overtime and scored the driving layup dagger with 1.6 seconds left in OT to cement the win for the Hornets. BREAKING LOGO NEWS: University Launches New ‘Denver Arch’

When the University of Denver formally released new logo brand guidelines to the public this past September, the announcement was met with mixed reviews. Of greater concern to many was the future of the ‘Denver Arch’, absent from the brand release. In Athletics, the Denver arch was a critical part of Denver’s athletic identity, especially in hockey. Would DU athletes be left with the interlocking logo(s) on the front of their uniforms as a primary identifier? Continue reading BREAKING LOGO NEWS: University Launches New ‘Denver Arch’

Eight Feels Great – Denver Uses Second Half Surge for Win

Denver men’s basketball (8-1) continues to make history while showing that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Absent two of their best players, Coban Porter (season-ending) and Tevon Smith (unclear), the talent on this season’s squad was on full display Sunday afternoon. Denver needed their deep roster at Hamilton gym and delivered a thrilling  84-75 victory against Texas A&M Commerce (4-5). The score was much closer than the final score indicated and coach Jeff Wulbrun acknowledged his team “gutted out a win in (what felt like) a one-possession game”.
