#3 Denver Routs Villanova & Butler 36-8, Moves to 12-0

Denver women’s lacrosse (12-0, 2-0) continued its historic undefeated season, crushing a pair of Big East foes with a pair of home wins, first thumping Villanova 17-4 this past Saturday and then bullying the Butler University Bulldogs, 19-4 on Wednesday. The Peter Barton Stadium sweep kept #3-ranked Denver in the hunt to become the best women’s lacrosse team in the country.

Last Saturday, Denver outscored Villanova 13-3 in the first half and the game was essentially over by the break. Julia Gilbert and Reagan Wilson led Denver with four goals each, each matching Villanova’s total goals for the day.  Ellie Curry added to the scoring spree with three goals of her own in the win. Goalkeeper Emelia Bohi only faced eight shots, allowing four goals, in the dominant victory over the Wildcats.

It was more of the same against Butler on Wednesday afternoon. Denver scored 11 goals to the Bulldogs’ three in the first half and coasted to a 19-4 win, allowing only one more goal in the second half. Sloan Kipp led DU with four goals followed by the ever-dangerous Julia Gilbert with three and Lauren Black with three. Emelia Bohi played the first half in the cage, saving five of eight shots.

The Pioneers are following a formula of using balanced scoring and leaning their stout #1-ranked defense in terms of goals allowed per game (5.82) to compile their gaudy wins.

The team had a decent crowd on Saturday (601 fans) but only 122 fans at the Butler game which was held mid-day on Wednesday. Fortunately, DU’s final two home games of this regular season are on a Friday night, April 14th against Stanford at 7:00 pm MT and Georgetown on Senior Day on Saturday, April 22nd.  If you have not had a chance to watch this team in person, they are worth a watch.

Next up is a trip to Storrs, Connecticut this Saturday to take on the #25th-ranked UConn Huskies in Big East Conference play. A strong showing there is important because Denver will return to the same Huskies’ field for the Big East Tournament May 5th-7th. Four conference games remain plus the home visit from the Stanford Cardinal on April 14th.
