We already recapped DU hockey’s sweep in Fairbanks, Alaska but there were a host of other DU Athletic successes this past week.
Maybe we were wrong about DU volleyball (6-8, 5-1). After an 0-6 non- conference start, DU has won six of their last eight matches to go 6-8 and 5-1 in conference action. Thursday at St. Thomas, DU won 3-1 and returned home for a Saturday matinee 3-2 marathon win against UMKC. Gianna Bartalo had 34 digs in the two match skein while Mackenzie Fidelak had 34 kills in a balanced Pioneer attack.
DU men’s soccer (6-2-4, 2-0-1) followed a disappointing conference tie with ORU the prior week with a road W. DU earned the tight 1-0 win on Saturday at UMKC. Sam Basset nailed a penalty kick at the eleven minute mark of the first half after DU’s Holger Olsson was taken down in the box. Denver was on their back foot, out shot 20 (6) to 6 (3), but held on for the road win.
Following a thrilling 4-2 win over South Dakota State at Pioneer Field Thursday, DU women’s soccer (8-1-5, 4-0-1) made it a two-match streak with a 3-1 win against South Dakota Sunday. In the earlier game against SDSU, Denver gave up the lead after going up 2-1 late in the second half. Denver rallied for two goals in the final 10 minutes by McKenna Dannenhauer and Ella Frost to cement the 4-2 victory. Denver used two first half goals and another tally in the second half, all by different players, to win 3-1 Sunday.
Overall, an outstanding week for Pioneer athletes.
The athletic lowlight this week was DU women’s golf gagging-up a 13-stroke lead after day two on their home course to lose the Ron Moore Tournament to Cal on the final day. Ugh.
Dunker thinks DU women’s golf loss is pathetic.
