Denver Athletics face Biggest Week of the Fall

This is a huge week as DU teams battle for a national championship (Triathlon), a conference tournament championship (men’s soccer), a battle for a conference regular season championship (Volleyball) and the start of hoops (men’s and women’s).

We told you about the dominant sweep by #2 DU hockey (6-1-1, 2-0-0) over CC by scores of 6-1 and 5-1. The Gold Pan will remain in the Mile High City following the weekend 🧹. Next up, a road-trip to Tempe to play Arizona State in a pair of games next Friday & Saturday. The Sun Devils have had an up and down start to the season and struggled to dispatch Miami and Stonehill over the last two weeks. The task gets much, much harder for ASU as the Pioneers make their Mullett Arena debut.

DU Triathlon goes for a national championship at 12:30 p.m. MT in Tempe, Arizona. If fans are traveling to watch DU hockey against ASU, why not go to the Triathlon Championships at Tempe Town Lake as well? DU is likely to battle for a place on the podium. Could Denver garner their 34th national team title, – the first women-only for Denver? Keep an eye on head coach Barbara Perkin’s DU team.

The Denver men’s soccer team (11-2-4, 7-0-1) completed a clean conference slate with a 2-0 win over UMKC Saturday at Senior Day at Pioneer Field. DU scored in each half en route to a 2-0 shutout of the UMKC Kangaroos. Outstanding DU keeper Isaac Nehme nailed down his 11th shutout of the season. Bryce Willoughby scored a goal shortly before half and Aiden O’Toole scored twenty-five minutes into the second half on a feed from Ian Smith.

This Thursday at 2:00 pm MT, Denver men’s soccer faces the Roos again in the semifinals of the Summit League Tournament in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The winner is likely to face host ORU in Saturday’s final.

Denver Volleyball (11-11, 10-4) split on the road, trouncing Oral Roberts on Thursday and falling to UMKC 3-2 on Saturday. Two more games remain before the Summit League Tournament. DU faces Omaha at Hamilton Gym on Wednesday at 6:00 pm MT. DU can tie Omaha for the top spot in the Summit League with a win – an incredible feat following a slow start, new coaching staff, and new players.

Basketball begins this week. Women’s hoops start tonight at Air Force and Friday at North Alabama. Men’s basketball also opens tonight at UC San Diego at 8:30 pm MT and Thursday at Hamilton Gym at 7:00 pm MT against Cal Poly. Read our preview.
