DeAndre Craig Makes the Point in his Freshman Campaign

Once his interview for this article was completed, DU freshman point guard DeAndre Craig was asked if we missed anything. “Yes,” said Craig while focusing on an important final point. “Our team wants to do big things this season. We want to do things here that have never been done before.” Despite an interview that focused exclusively on Craig, he wanted to make sure that readers knew that team goals were the most important thing. Denver Gymnastics Trend Up in First Four Weeks

Week 4 is in the books for DU gymnastics. Denver has seen some promising improvements and some setbacks. Two of the most noteworthy accomplishments were senior Jessica Hutchinson’s career-high 39.725 All Around score to place first against Oklahoma, and Rylie Mundell’s return to the floor lineup and All Around, both in week 4 on 1/26. Hot Shooting Omaha Burns Denver, 91-72

Coming off a huge 2-OT win Thursday night. Denver (13-9, 4-3) hit the proverbial wall Saturday afternoon. Omaha shot the lights out –  going 57% (33/58) from the field, 56.5% (13-23) from downtown and 100% from the line (12/12). Denver was caught flat-footed and outrebounded 29-40 as nothing went right for a Denver team that was fatigued from their Thursday night marathon win. No excuses though, Omaha was the better team. The Mavs were led by a Pioneer killer Frankie Filder who put on a clinic with 31 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 1 block. The junior forward is a delight to watch – just not when you have to play against him. Continue reading Hot Shooting Omaha Burns Denver, 91-72

Game For the Ages™ Engineers a Special Moment

There was a 6’6” sophomore forward scholarship player who suited up for his first game Thursday night when Denver topped South Dakota 111-110 in the double overtime classic. Not a basketball scholarship student-athlete mind you but an engineering scholarship student. He was spotted during pick-up basketball games last season at DU and was made a student manager this season. Denver petitioned the NCAA to allow Tolu Baba Ajayi (called ‘T’ by his teammates) to suit up as a regular roster player for Denver after the school holiday break, his first time in an official Crimson and Gold gameday uniform. A Game for the Ages, Denver Stuns South Dakota 111-110 in Double OT

Why mess around with a long game write-up. Let’s begin with the end. Sure, 49 points is great but the game-winning steal by Tommy Bruner was the play of the game.  Let’s just look at the final seconds when Denver found a way to earn a last-second double-OT win at Hamilton Gym.

DU Counters UND’s Altitude Room, Simulates Grand Forks Game Conditions

This past year, the University of North Dakota hockey program constructed a 1,400-square-foot altitude chamber. According to the Grand Forks Herald, “UND’s staff will close the doors, turn up the altitude to 9,000 feet and allow the players to train at altitude — much like the U.S. Olympic teams do by putting their training facility in Colorado Springs.”

The move targets their primary conference rival, The University of Denver. Continue reading DU Counters UND’s Altitude Room, Simulates Grand Forks Game Conditions

Second Period Pioneers Strike Again As Denver Earns 6-2 Road Sweep at Omaha

The #5 Denver Pioneers (17-5-2, 8-3-1 NCHC, 23 pts) have outscored St. Cloud State and Omaha a combined 16-4 over the past two weekends. Last weekend, on Friday night, the Pioneers outscored the Huskies 5-0 en route to a 5-1 victory. Then, this weekend, in both games against #19 Omaha (11-9-2, 4-7-1 NCHC, 11 pts) the Pioneers outscored the Mavericks 4-1 in the middle frame en route to 6-3 and 6-2 victories. In game one, it was a final five-minute barrage to blow the game open but tonight, in game two, it was a well-balanced four-goal blitz from the moment the puck dropped on the period and Omaha simply could not keep up. In game two, though, the Pios kept the Mavs off the scoresheet in the third to clinch the 6-2 victory. Continue reading Second Period Pioneers Strike Again As Denver Earns 6-2 Road Sweep at Omaha
