South Dakota Returns the Favor, Downs DU in OT, 92-86

DU men’s basketball (13-12, 4-6) traveled to Vermillion, South Dakota to play the University of South Dakota Coyotes. Following the Game For the Ages™ at DU’s Hamilton Gym on January 25th, a double overtime barn burner won by DU, both teams went on a three-game skid. One team was set to snap the losing streak Thursday night and it was South Dakota’s turn to win in overtime, 92-86. Denver led for large stretches of the game but gave the Coyotes numerous chances to get back in the game and, ultimately, win. Continue reading South Dakota Returns the Favor, Downs DU in OT, 92-86

Records Fall as Denver Gymnastics Hits 198!

On 2/4/24, Denver gymnastics faced off against Towson at Magness Arena for a win 198.0 to 195.6.

Denver is joined by just five other teams in the NCAA who have hit 198 points this season! A score of 198 is an average score of 9.9 for every counted score on every event. What’s most surprising, is that of the six teams who have hit 198, only LSU is in the SEC. (The SEC judges are known to throw out 10.0s like candy at a parade.) This is only the second time in program history that DU has hit the astronomical 198 mark, the first being last March, also at home, also in a dual meet versus Towson. We don’t want to write it. You don’t want to read it. Here’s the box score, which does a better job explaining what the hell happened at Magness Arena tonight than we ever could: Western Michigan 7, Denver 2

After dropping three of their last four games, Denver has a much-needed bye week next weekend before heading up to Duluth for their only series of the season with the Bulldogs.

But hey, at least the men’s lacrosse team had a good day!

#14 Denver Erases 4-Goal Deficit to Stun #5 Johns Hopkins in Overtime

After a long offseason wait, new Denver head coach Matt Brown, who succeeded Bill Tierney, the greatest coach in men’s lacrosse history, finally made his debut against #5 Johns Hopkins (0-1, 0-0 Big Ten) at Homewood Field in Baltimore. And his first game most certainly did not disappoint as his #14 Denver Pioneers (1-0, 0-0 BIG EAST) overcame its own sloppiness to erase an 11-7 deficit in the 4th quarter to earn a 13-12 overtime victory. Attack JJ Sillstrop recorded a sock trick – scoring six goals – including a buzzer-beater at the end of regulation to force overtime and the game-winner. Denver Survives Poor Puck Luck & Extra Attacker Frenzy to Earn 3-2 Bounceback Victory Over WMU

After last weekend’s disaster in Grand Forks where they were swept by the North Dakota Fighting Hawks, the #5 Denver Pioneers (18-7-2, 9-5-1 NCHC, 26 pts) returned home to face the #15 Western Michigan Broncos (15-9-1, 6-9-0 NCHC, 22 pts) in a key middle of the NCHC pack showdown. The Pioneers, looking for a big bounceback effort, scored twice in the opening period, then hit five posts, and added another in the final period to hold off the Broncos, 3-2.
