Unfortunately, the Roos pulled away in the final five minutes of the first half and the first ten minutes of the second half to earn a convincing 84-69 victory over DU. Denver Gymnastics Tumbles To #11 But Can Battle Back In Week 9
Denver gymnastics traveled to BYU on Friday for the second away meet in a row, only four days between meets. Senior star Jessica Hutchinson did not compete. Coach Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart said she was letting Jessica rest to provide opportunities for other team members step up in the lineup. There were also a few other starters who did not compete this week in all of their normal events.
DU needed a high away score to increase their NQS score and cement their ranking. Unfortunately, the lineup switches did not allow DU to hit scores that will help their ranking. In fact, now that NQS is being used, DU falls a few spots. Continue reading Denver Gymnastics Tumbles To #11 But Can Battle Back In Week 9
Denver Builds a Snowman Against Miami to Earn Second-Straight 5-Point Weekend
There are plenty of reasons to be frustrated with the 2023-24 Denver Pioneers hockey team but their NCAA-best offense (4.88 GPG) is most certainly not one of them. That offense was on full display in game two against Miami (of Ohio) (7-20-3, 1-17-2 NCHC, 7 pts) as the #3 Pioneers (21-8-3, 12-6-2 NCHC, 36 pts) exploded for eight goals en route to an 8-1 drubbing of the Redhawks. The win broke the third-place tie with Colorado College and they are alone there, four points behind 2nd-place St. Cloud State with a series with the Huskies in Minnesota on deck next weekend. Denver Rides Frantic Fourth Quarter to 17-16 Win Over Cornell
Denver men’s lacrosse (4-0) played the Cornell Big Red Saturday afternoon at a sold-out Peter Barton Stadium. Ryan Giles netted his first goal of the season to put DU up 16-15. Richie Connell scored the man-up goal to give Denver a two-goal margin at 4:55 and Denver’s defense allowed one goal down the stretch to the Big Red. This was a game of runs and DU caught fire in the fourth quarter, riding critical faceoff wins by Alec Stathekis. Continue reading Denver Rides Frantic Fourth Quarter to 17-16 Win Over Cornell
Miami Comes Back in Third Period to Tie Denver, 3-3
We’ve all heard the old cliché , “a 2–0 lead is the worst lead“. Well, it certainly was Friday night for DU when the Pioneers held a 3-1 lead in the third period. The visiting Miami Redhawks responded with two goals and knotted the game to force a 3-on-3 overtime period. Denver found the post in the 5-minute OT but neither team could find the back of the cage in the extra period. Denver finally scored on one of their three shootout opportunities while Matt Davis held the Redhawks off the board for the two conference points. SDSU Blasts a Cold DU team at Frost Arena, 97-70
Denver men’s basketball traveled to Brookings, S.D. to face the South Dakota State Jackrabbits Thursday night. After falling to Denver by 19 points earlier in the season, the Jackrabbits demolished Denver 97-70 at Frost Arena. The Jackrabbits raced out to leads of 14-0 and 30-10 before DU cut the lead to 7 points in the final minute of the first half. A frustrated Tommy Bruner got an intentional foul to end the half and the Jacks momentum carried over to the second half. Following free throws to open the final 20 minutes, SDSU pushed the lead to 21 points in the first five minutes and the game was, essentially, over. It got worse from there as the Jackrabbits added to their huge lead and finished the game with a lay-up, their largest lead of the contest, 27 points, to polish off the flat Pioneers 97-70. Denver Gymnastics #10 in Year’s First NQS Ranking
The Pioneers Gymnastics team posted another win over Iowa State and West Virginia in week 7 on 2/18/24. In what West Virginia Athletics called their Beauty and the Beast meet, fans were treated to women’s gymnastics and men’s wrestling simultaneously in the WVU Coliseum. It was a cute concept and brought both wrestling and gym fans out for the same event. WVU executed the event well, and the gymnastics portion was streamed on ESPN+.
