Denver Sweeps Regular Season Titles in Lacrosse and Earns NCAA Bids in Tennis

DU’s run of athletic success extended another week. DU men’s and women’s lacrosse earned road victories this weekend, securing regular season Big EAST  titles. Denver’s men’s and women’s tennis teams won regular season conference titles and coasted through their Summit League Tournaments this weekend to advance to the NCAA tournament.

#12 Denver women’s lacrosse (12-3, 5-0) overcame a four-goal deficit to secure a road win against the Villanova Wildcats. Denver outscored Villanova 8-1 in the second half, led by two goals by Sloane Kipp in the third quarter and a pair of tallies by Julia Gilbert. The win cemented DU’s fifth consecutive Big EAST title. Denver has a big non-conference game against #10 Yale on Monday at 12:30 pm MT before returning home to face Xavier on Saturday, April 27th to conclude the regular season. The Big EAST Championships will be held May 2nd-May 4th in Cincinnati, Ohio.

#7 Denver men’s lacrosse (10-2, 4-0) won a tight contest against Providence 7-4. It was a defensive struggle with Denver holding the Friars to one goal in the first half to hold a 3-1 lead at the break. Providence opened the second half with two goals before Cody Malawsky took a feed from Noah Manning to give the Pioneers some breathing room. DU blew open the game in the final four minutes of the game when Malawsky scored yet again and Michael Lampert finished off the Friars with a goal with under a minute to go, 7-4 Pioneers. Denver will complete regular season play with a night game this Friday against Marquette at 7:00 pm MT at Peter Barton Stadium.

Denver men’s tennis capped an undefeated regular season with a Summit League Tournament sweep to finish 23-0, 5-0. Nonconference wins over Purdue, Utah, Wisconsin and Oregon added credibility to their undefeated campaign, the only such accomplishment this season or by ANY NCAA DI squad since 2018. Denver put the exclamation mark on their perfect season with a 4-1 victory over North Dakota and a 4-0 sweep against host Drake at the Summit League Championships. First Round NCAA action will take place May 3rd through May 5th.

Denver women’s tennis (17-6, 6-0) completed their conference sweep in Des Moines, blitzing ORU 4-0 and blanking South Dakota (4-0) in the final. The win marked their 10th straight Summit League crown. Like the men, they defeated a host of power non-conference programs during the regular season with wins over Colorado State, Iowa, Oregon, Utah and Minnesota in addition to their undefeated conference title. Denver will be assigned to a first-round campus site May 3rd-5th for the NCAA Tournament.

DU men’s and women’s golf teams are beginning their Summit League Tournaments. Women began play Sunday, April 21st-23rd in Mayetta, Kansas. DU men’s golf starts their Summit League Tournament campaign on April 28th-April 30th at Spellersburg, Indiana.
