Part 2: The $2.8 Billion NCAA Settlement – The Impact on DU

As we discussed yesterday, two major changes are facing NCAA Division I members. First, back pay of $2.8 billion to former student-athletes to be paid over 10 years. Second, the remaining Power Four conferences have agreed to pay all their athletes going forward and begin ‘revenue sharing’. Mid-majors, including DU, can opt-in by paying some or all of their athletes. Continue reading Part 2: The $2.8 Billion NCAA Settlement – The Impact on DU

Notre Dame Ousts Denver 13-6 in National Semifinal

Denver stayed within one goal at halftime, 5-4, but ultimately Notre Dame’s depth and talent seized the day as the Irish rolled to a 13-6 win against a determined Denver side. Denver had a narrow path to victory but the Pioneers were betrayed at the X, committed far too many turnovers, and an injury to offensive star, JJ Sillstrop, limited DU’s offensive production. Notre Dame owned the day and in the end, the better team earned the victory. Continue reading Notre Dame Ousts Denver 13-6 in National Semifinal

Denver Men’s Lacrosse Is All-In for 2024 Run

There was great excitement when Matt Brown was announced as the replacement for legendary head coach Bill Tierney to lead DU men’s lacrosse. It would be wrong to say DU had lost their way since their national championship in 2015. Heck, in the past nine seasons, the Pioneers played on Memorial Day in 2017 and secured 2016, 2018, and 2021 NCAA Tournament bids. But, despite all of that and winning six BIG EAST regular season titles since the program’s 2015 high water mark, Denver has failed to win a single BIG EAST Conference Tournament title. Not exactly chopped liver for a program that is always a difficult out, especially at Peter Barton Stadium, but their seemingly annual Memorial Day pilgrimage to Championship Weekend had become nonexistent in recent years. Denver Beats Syracuse to Return to First Final Four Since 2017

When the Denver Pioneers Men’s Lacrosse team hired offensive guru and genius Dave Metzbower to replace Matt Brown as offensive coordinator when the latter was promoted to head coach last summer, defense was the furthest thing from most fans’ minds. Surely, if Denver would return to Championship Weekend for the first time since 2017, it would be because of the unrivaled offensive minds that the Pioneers had on staff, right? In some ways, yes, but on this day, against the 4th-seeded Syracuse Orange in the NCAA quarterfinals in Baltimore, the 5th-seeded Pioneers rode their elite defense and goaltending to a 10-8 victory. Denver’s first-ever victory over the Orange sent the Pioneers through to next weekend’s Final Four at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, on the same field where they won their first title in 2015. Denver Misses Out as WCC Adds Grand Canyon and Seattle University

Last week, the West Coast Conference (WCC) announced the addition of Grand Canyon and Seattle University. The universities are leaving their current home, the West Athletic Conference (WAC),  to assume full membership in 2025. The two moves bypass the University of Denver. However, this is likely not the last expansion move for the  WCC. Conference insiders have said that the conference will eventually stand at 12-14 full-time members. Northwestern Routs Denver, 17-4

Denver women’s lacrosse (16-4, 5-0) faced #1 seed Northwestern, an eight-time national champion,  in Evanston, Illinois Sunday afternoon. It wasn’t pretty. Denver Earns Wire-to-Wire Win Over Michigan, 16-11

#5 seed Denver men’s lacrosse (12-3, 5-0) faced Michigan on Saturday afternoon at Peter Barton Stadium. DU was coming off a tough BIG EAST loss to Villanova. The Wolverines entered the game following a Big 10 Tournament win and four straight victories. Excluding the first eight minutes of the third quarter and a handful of faulty clears, Denver played nearly a flawless game. Denver never trailed and coasted to a decisive five-goal win, 16-11. Malcolm Kleban was fantastic in goal for DU with 10 saves. Continue reading Denver Earns Wire-to-Wire Win Over Michigan, 16-11
