Denver men’s lacrosse (4-4) returned to a sold-out Peter Barton Stadium to play under the lights Monday night. Coming off a narrow road loss to #8 Ohio State (6-4), the Pioneers had a chance to earn a statement win against the ranked Orange. At halftime, the score was close (6-5 Syracuse) but a six-goal Syracuse third quarter looked to bury Denver. However, the Pioneers rallied in the fourth quarter and forged a chance to tie the contest in the final minute. DU’s attempted game-tying shot bounced wide of the cage and Syracuse left with the win, 13-12. Continue reading Syracuse Uses Six Goal Third Quarter to Escape Denver Rally, 13-12

Malawsky Fuels Second Half Surge Over Michigan, 15-9

Michigan lacrosse traveled to play DU Saturday in sky blue, sun-drenched Denver in front of a packed Peter Barton Stadium crowd. Denver men’s lacrosse (4-1) was looking to rebound from a home loss to Cornell the prior weekend.  Denver looked to clean up faceoffs (-5/season), create turnovers (-9/season) and improve on the man-up advantage (2-10/season) in order to slip by the Wolverines. DU excelled in all three areas. Denver unraveled the halftime tie and pulled away for a convincing 15-9 victory. Continue reading Malawsky Fuels Second Half Surge Over Michigan, 15-9

Denver Battles Weather, Field and AFA in 11-9 Win

It was a cold, yellow-ball day at Peter Barton stadium when #9 DU men’s Lacrosse (2-0) opened against Air Force. The conditions included freezing sleet throughout the game on a new carpet that played like a slippery slide. Legendary head Coach Bill Tierney was in the radio booth while his protege, Matt Brown, led the Pioneers in the uncertain conditions. Tierney must have been beside himself, witnessed 29 total turnovers in the first half by  Air Force (13) and Denver (16).  The teams turned over the ball another 20 times in the second half as the field appeared to get even more slippery while making unwise passes and clears. And yes, the footing was treacherous. Ultimately, the Pioneers figured it out in the final minutes and eeked out an 11-9 win over AFA.
