Goddard Earns Guinness World Record on Longs Peak Spring Ascent – in Lederhosen

Eco-adventurer and Houston entrepreneur, Damien Goddard, shared his story at a hastily called press conference Tuesday in Estes Park, Colorado. “When I read that Scott Dunlap got the Guinness World Record running a 3:04:06 Marathon wearing lederhosen, I thought, ‘Why not me!’” said Damien Goddard, founder of LetsGoDU.

“I’m not a runner so I contacted the folks at Guinness and agreed to an early spring ascent of Longs Peak, the tallest mountain in Rocky Mountain National Park along the cable route – in lederhosen. As an avid outdoorsman, I love the sound of carabiners clanking in my backpack, climbing rope in my hands, and the feel of crampons biting into glaze ice.”

“Take this Mother Nature!” yelled Goddard at the Summit.

Goddard’s arduous trek took 9 hours and 17 grueling minutes until he reached the summit of Longs Peak. The freezing temperatures, 45-mile-per-hour gusts, and a marmot attack near the top of the peak nearly scuttled the record attempt.

“I tried to give him a cracker and he almost took my arm off.” Goddard threw the rodent 2,000 feet off Keplinger’s Couloir.

And the hardest part? “Chafing. I trained in Lederhosen for 6 months in Houston – even wore them to board meetings, ball games, and out on dates but the leather was stiff and frozen.” Goddard finished the ordeal with chapped thighs and bite marks on his arms.

Goddard will be recovering at Denver’s Four Seasons Hotel and plans to celebrate his record-breaking achievement next week by attending the annual DU hockey banquet. Register here to see Goddard and, most importantly, celebrate Denver’s National Championship hockey team next Wednesday, May 15th.

  1. Lest we forget he’s also an Astronaut 👨‍🚀. When Dunker grows up, he wants to be like Goddard.
