It was not that long ago when Denver fielded one of the smallest basketball squads under Head Coach Joe Scott and his beloved Princeton offense. On Wednesday, though, 7’0″ Abdulai Fanta Kabba announced on social media his intention to come to DU and join Jeff Wulbrun’s team for the 2024-25 season. His commitment, along with Denver’s 7’0″ Isaiah Carr, gives the Pioneers an imposing presence in the paint and will allow the Pioneers the luxury of going big – really, really big. The added bonus is the flexibility and depth of the current roster to go small as needed or even throw a hybrid lineup on the court if necessary.
The production from this raw, young talent adds to yesterday’s announcement of 6’9″ Tymo Sternicki joining the squad. The speed, physicality, and pace of play in Division I always take some time for incoming freshmen to develop. However, from scouting reports and film clips, make no mistake, Kabba can be a major contributor to DU men’s basketball in the 2024-25 season.
The addition of Kabba, along with experienced junior 7’0″ Isaiah Carr will give Denver an imposing presence in the pivot.

Head Coach Jeff Wulbrun and Assistant Bill Peterson have a history of developing elite big men at their stops at high-level college programs. Peterson also has years of experience with the hands-on development of NBA players. Don’t look for Denver to be pushed around in the Summit League when the Pioneers can go big to combat physical teams in the paint.
Kabba, originally from Nigeria, completed two years of high school in Nigeria and is completing his high school degree during his two-year stay in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Kabba played for the 1-of-1 Academy this past season. According to Phenom Hoops Report, “Fanta has been a name growing more and more this summer with his play, as the 6’11 big man (now 7’0″) has continued his development and understanding of the game. Fanta’s size immediately catches your eye, but we have noticed his development over the last year both offensively and defensively. He has added more, been more assertive around the basket, and has shown his rim protection as well.”
Like most Bigs, his defense will likely come along first, and then, his offensive production. “He is one that uses his length well around the basket, finishes at the rim, and brings a strong presence on the defensive end.” according to HoopsPhenom. “Kabba is one that can be a strong presence in protecting the rim, as he runs the floor and his wingspan allows him to make him tough to shoot over. He still has a ways to go but there is a lot a lot to like about his game.”
It is unclear if Abdulai Fanta Kabba will join the team this summer or fall. Polish freshman Tymoteusz (Tymo) Sternicki will be competing in Europe for his country this summer.
Kabba is just one more important puzzle piece as Denver attempts to improve for the fourth consecutive season under Head Coach Jeff Wulbrun. Recent additions, combined with returning players, may well result in a special season for Denver men’s hoops.

I believe he is from Sierra Leone in West Africa.
He had offers from Big 10 and SEC schools, Rutgers and Vanderbilt, respectively, so it’s a good get for the Pios. Gotta win now, because 7-footers who can play the game well aren’t staying long in the Summit League.
Clemson as well.
Apologies, the feature photo is wrong from Google. I will revise when I am back to my computer. UPDATED
Huge win for Coach Wulbrun. Gonna be a fun year to watch. Looks like we will have our most well rounded squad ever. Really strong posts, guards, forwards, and lock down defenders.
Can’t wait for the schedule to come out.
