Gymnastics Tumbles to #21 After Loss at Arizona

Denver lost to Arizona on Jan 31 with a score of 194.6 to 196.775. The season’s woes continue in unfathomable ways for a seasoned team, who on paper should be finishing in the low 197s at this point.

In week 5 last year, DU put up a 198.0. Jessica Hutchinson is the only DU starter from that 198 team who didn’t return this season. Take her out of the team totals from that day and the 2025 returning team members would have hit a team score of 197.45. So Hutchinson definitely left a huge hole, but perhaps the void left by Jessica is felt in more ways than team scores.

Denver returned four athletes for their fifth year of eligibility due to the pandemic. In the five years these athletes have been with Denver gymnastics, the average team scores through week five of each season were as follows:
2021: 196.544
2022: 196.790
2023: 197.155
2024: 197.215
2025: 195.835

Friday’s score of 194.6 is the lowest team score since February 3, 2017. In 2017, the team average was 195.9 through five weeks. This year’s average thus far is 195.835 and Denver is 21st in ranking. In 2017 DU climbed back up to end the season at #9. So there’s still hope.

  1. This team was flat out poor vs Arizona. Still time to get the mojo back, but right now, the team is circling the drain in for the worst season in years. Time to step up.
