Denver Women’s Lacrosse Struggles in Loss to Stony Brook, 17-8

It was a coffee and a sack lunch start for the 11:00 am  DU versus #18 Stony Brook tilt at Petey-B Stadium. Stony Brook led in nearly every statistical category and coasted to a 17-8 victory. The loss dropped Denver to 5-4 in non-conference play. It was a surprising loss for Denver who had defeated Michigan and Fairfield at home the prior two games.

Denver found the scoresheet three times in the first quarter on shots off Kyra Obert, Olivia Ripple and Eva Thomsen-Marr. Stony Brook got first and last blood in the period and scored five goals in all to take a two-goal lead.

The Seawolves rattled off four straight goals to initiate scoring in the second quarter. DU’s Reagan Wilson stopped the bleeding with five minutes left in the period, 9-4. Thomsen-Marr added the final score of the half, 9-5. Thirteen turnovers for DU was a surprise as the DU’s Pink Defense could only create eight errors.

Opening the third quarter, the Seawolves rattled off three straight goals, 12-5, before Caroline Kile solved the Stony Brook defense. Denver turnovers, 6 in the period, stopped any hope of a Pioneer comeback.

The final quarter was uneventful with the Pioneers facing a seven-goal deficit. DU scored two times in the quarter but was outscored 5-2 for the final score. Lauren Black and Riley McDonald capped the scoring for Denver.

While DU led the draw control battle (17-9), they trailed in turnovers (23-14) and shots (34-17).

DU opens Big EAST play against Xavier in Cincinnati on Saturday at 9:00 am MT.
