Denver men’s soccer (7-6, 2-1) scored two big wins during the week in non-conference and conference action. Early in the week, DU traveled to D.C. to take on #14 Georgetown. The Hoyas scored 18 minutes into the first half. Denver’s Trevor Wright countered in less than a minute, 1-1. Despite trailing on shots during the match, 14-5, the Pioneers’ Luke Schultz took a direct kick boot and delivered the thrilling last-minute game-winner at 89:44 for the 2-1 win.

Saturday afternoon, Denver men’s soccer returned to the friendly confines of Pioneer Field to face undefeated conference foe Delaware (still getting used to Delaware and UMass-Amherst as Summit League soccer members; however, both sides add quality). Delaware outshot DU 8-5 in the first half while DU keeper Isaac Nehme held the Blue Hens off the board. Bryce Willoughby found the game winner at 37:02 of the first half to take a 1-0 lead. In the second half, DU’s Kyle McGowan scored the insurance goal at 59:18, 2-0. DU bunkered in the final 30 minutes in their own end, fending off numerous scoring opportunities to salt the win. While it is hard to argue with head coach Jamie Franks’ astounding home record (78-10-10), it is frustrating to watch a skilled side on their back foot for a full thirty minutes on their heels.
There is no rest for Franks’ side as they travel to Pittsburgh Tuesday night.
Denver women’s soccer (7-4-3, 4-1) rebounded from their first conference defeat to Oral Roberts with a win Saturday night at Pioneer Field against South Dakota State. It only took a single first-half goal by Lilly Lund to deliver the game winner at 20:44, 1-0. DU dominated the Jackrabbits on shots, 19-10, and corner kicks, 9-3, but SDSU keeper Mallorie Benhart kept the game tight until the ninety-minute horn.
Women’s soccer heads to St. Paul, Minnesota, to take on St. Thomas Thursday at 3:00 pm MT.
DU women’s volleyball made a conference swing to the Dakotas to split a pair of matches. On Thursday, DU trekked to Grand Forks and diced up the Fighting Hawks 3-0. The Fighting Hawks’ highest game point total was 17 as DU coasted to 25 in each set. Genevieve Lewis earned 10 kills, and Ilayda Erin collected 16 assists in the victory. The tables were turned in Fargo when the Bison turned the tables on Saturday, defeating the Pioneers 3-0. In the sweep, Denver held close each set (25-20, 25-22, 25-23) but could never put together a scoring run to polish off the Bison on their home court.
Next up is a match on Saturday at 11:00 am at Hamilton Gym against Omaha.
