DU women’s and men’s tennis teams ended their run in the Summit League as both captured the 2026 Conference Championship on Sat. April 25. Both tournaments were held at the Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
In the morning session the women’s team (#66 ITA ranking) has had incredible success in the league as Denver has never lost to a Summit League opponent since joining the conference in 2013-14! The team easily swept North Dakota 4-0. The Pioneers are led by seniors Claudia Martinez and Louise Wikander, who won at #1 doubles. Freshman Yunfei Cai joined senior Marley Lambert to win 6-3 at #2. Senior Zoe Adkins and sophomore Natalie Cinkova were at 3-4 when the match was left unfinished. DU only needed three points from singles matches to clinch the match and Martinez, Adkins and Wikander dominated to three victories.
For the afternoon session Denver’s men’s tennis team (#71) also beat North Dakota to win 4-0. It was the Pios third straight title and eighth Summit League championship. DU grabbed the single doubles point with victories at #2 and #3. The #1 double team match was left unfinished with graduate student Connor Robb-Wilcox and sophomore Theo Coats leading 5-2. Freshman Aaron Beduhn (#6) got the first singles point by winning 6-1, 6-2. #5 Robb- Wilcox and #4 senior Ryoma Mishiro secured the next two victories to win the match.
Denver joins the West Coast Conference July 1 and will find the competition much tougher. They will meet regularly ranked teams in the conference schedule. San Diego (#16) won the 2026 men’s league title over Pepperdine and Pepperdine (#11) won the women’s championship for the 12th straight year by beating San Diego.
Both DU teams earned automatic bids to their NCAA tournaments. The men’s team will find out their opponent at 2 pm Monday, April 27 and the women’s team at 2:30 pm.
Congrats to men’s tennis! Will be much different next year in the WCC, with a plethora of top 50 teams. It’s been great for DU’s confidence to win so many Summit titles, but competition will be much tougher in the future. Hopefully they can continue to build on the success.
Honestly, DU should never lose a contest in Summit League Tennis, Golf or Swimming, as those are sports that private schools should dominate – ORU and St. Thomas nothwithstanding.
Glad we’re moving on the WCC, which will be tougher but far more rewarding for the athletes…
