St. Cloud Drops Denver in Extra Time, 4-3

The #2-ranked Denver hockey team (6-3-0, 2-1-0) faced off against #4 St. Cloud State (8-1-0, 1-0-0)  Friday night at Magness Arena in an early season clash of powerhouses. It was not a beautiful game as both sides struggled at times while each missed golden opportunities to end the game in regulation.

Something had to give – and it was Denver who gave up two leads in regulation as well as the overtime winner to fall, 4-3. Continue reading St. Cloud Drops Denver in Extra Time, 4-3

Denver Hockey Road Trip Recap: Mazur Scores Five as Pioneers Sweep RedHawks To Earn First Six NCHC Points

Despite the Miami RedHawks’ (4-3-1, 0-2-0 NCHC) best efforts to earn an NCHC-opening split, the #3 Denver Pioneers (6-2-0, 2-0-0 NCHC) came through and once again showed why they have their sights set on winning a record 10th national title and the RedHawks are an improving but still bottom-half NCHC team. On Friday night, the Pioneers skated to a dominant 4-0 victory, goaltender Magnus Chrona’s first shutout of the season and 10th of his career and though they didn’t hold a lead until just over seven minutes left in the game on Saturday, a three-goal third-period rally gave the Pios the 4-2 victory and first road sweep of the year. Pioneers Rally in Third Period to Win Eighth-Straight vs Miami, Secure NCHC-Opening Road Sweep

The Miami RedHawks (4-3-1, 0-2-0 NCHC) did not trail until there was just 7:11 left in the game and yet, they still lost. But that’s what can happen when you’re playing the reigning national champions who have their eyes squarely fixed on winning another. Carter Mazur scored his second of two goals and his fifth on the weekend with 7:11 left to give the #3 Denver Pioneers (6-2-0, 2-0-0 NCHC) their first lead of the game and one they would not relinquish as Massimo Rizzo added an empty-net goal to seal the 4-2 victory. It was Denver’s eighth-straight victory over the RedHawks and their fourth-straight overall as they open NCHC play with a critical six points and sit atop the extremely early conference standings. Denver wins Homecoming Slugfest over Providence in OT, 3-2

Was there a hockey game Saturday night?

There was certainly perfect fall weather, Homecoming food trucks, plenty of spirits were consumed, and even the 2022 NCAA Championship banner was raised to the rafters before the game.

But DU saved the best memory for last, as DU sophomore Jack Devine won the Saturday night game, rifling a 20- foot wrister to break a 2-2 tie just 1:15 into overtime, sending over 6,000 DU fans into a happy conclusion to Homecoming weekend,  completing the sweep of the Providence Friars on the weekend in one of the more physical non-league series in recent years.

Pioneers’ Blessed Special Teams Score Three Power-Play Goals to Topple Friars in Homecoming Opener

If there was any lingering bad taste in the #4 Denver Pioneers’ (3-2-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) mouths following a road sweep at the hands of UMass-Amherst last weekend, you certainly couldn’t tell. Thanks to three power-play goals and a strong, 4-for-5 penalty kill effort, the Pioneers downed the #11 Providence College Friars (3-1-0, 1-0-0 Hockey East) 4-1 to open Homecoming Weekend. It was a strong statement for the crimson and gold coming off of last weekend’s performance and put a good feeling into the building ahead of tomorrow night’s 2022 national title banner-raising ceremony. Mixed Results For Denver Athletes Heading into Homecoming Week

DU Men’s soccer (7-2-5, 2-0-2) played to a frustrating 1-1 draw against Kansas City Saturday night. Three straight draws and less than one goal scored per game over their last eight games have shown yet another season where DU struggles to score goals. Denver appears to still have a solid back line, giving up occasional dangerous runs, and consistently controls the midfield. Unfortunately, the front-line players lack the creativity to finish and take the pressure off their back line.  DU has two road trips (Eastern Illinois 10/29 and Lindenwood (11/2) and a finale against Western Illinois (11/5) at Pioneer Field to find some scoring magic. Denver is in a tight regular season race with Omaha, Kansas City, and Oral Roberts separated by a game or less. Continue reading Mixed Results For Denver Athletes Heading into Homecoming Week

Denver Hockey Road Trip Recap: Pioneers Swept on First Road Trip for Second-Straight Season

In what is either a bad omen for the rest of the season or a sign of another national championship season, depending on your perspective, the #1 Denver Pioneers (2-2-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) were swept at the hands of the #13 UMass-Amherst Minutemen (2-0-1, 0-0-0 Hockey East) by scores of 4-2 and 3-0 at Mullins Center in Amherst, MA. The sweep marks the second consecutive season that the Pios traveled to the northeast and returned to the Mile High City without a win. Last year, during the third weekend of the season, the 4-0-0 Pios played Providence and Boston College and lost 6-5 and 5-1, respectively, en route to the program’s ninth national championship.
