As we celebrate 70 years of Pioneer hockey this coming weekend (Nov. 1-2, 2019), it helps to know just how far the DU Hockey program has evolved in those 70 years. The first 20 formative years saw DU go from a terrible start-up program to the dominant program of the 1960s as a five-time NCAA Champion. Top-ranked Denver and Boston College tangled this weekend at Magness Arena and Denver came away with 3-0 and 6-4 victories for its fifth and sixth straight wins to start the season. It was a great Homecoming weekend for the Pios both on and off the ice. DU played great hockey all weekend against a big, skilled, NCHC-like Boston College team and it bodes extremely well for the rest of the season (and its eventual Pairwise positioning). At times, Denver dominated BC and at others, they were forced to play on their heels and find a way to push back. Denver was successful on all fronts and if you’re a DU fan, you have to be pleased with how the first three weeks have gone for the unbeaten Pios. DENVER – A goaltenders’ duel this game was not. On Saturday night at Magness Arena, the top-ranked Denver Pioneers used three early second period goals and a strong special teams performance to put away the #6 Boston College Eagles and extend its regular-season nonconference winning streak to 17. The Pioneers’ impressive – if stressful – 6-4 victory came just a night after they struggled to score just one goal against BC goaltender and 2019 NHL first-round draft pick Spencer Knight. DENVER – Sir Spencer was Boston College’s Knight in shining armor. But Cole Guttman found the one flaw in Knight’s game early in the second period and that was all that top-ranked Denver needed to beat the #6 Eagles, 3-0 on Friday night at Magness Arena. Those of you who contributed to the “Go Denver Pioneers Spirit Fund” over the last 12 months will see the first fruits of your donations tonight at the Denver vs. Boston College Hockey Game!
The spirit fund has purchased over 100 re-usable DU fan signs and banners (see examples in the photo accompanying this story) designed to enhance the game-day experience in multiple different sections around Magness Arena. This new signage will be available for use during games by season ticket holders and students, and the DU athletic department is handling game-day distribution and end-of-game retention.
This first signage investment represents less than 1/6th of the current fund so stay tuned for more purchases to debut later this season!
How sweet it is for Denver to come home after a 10-day road trip with four wins in its back pocket. The Pioneers also return to another familiar place this week as the top-ranked team in college hockey with 38 first-place votes in the USCHO poll. The Pioneers showed that they can get scoring from all lines and continue to get production from their freshmen. One key freshman is goaltender Magnus Chrona who will play his first games at Magness Arena this weekend. Chrona remains perfect at 4-0 with a GAA of 1.75 and save percentage of .935, quite an impressive debut stretch. He and the Pioneers will look to give Boston College their first losses of the season when the No. 6 ranked team visits Denver this weekend.
After a year hiatus in 2018-19, Denver and Boston College are hitting the ice once again. Two years ago, DU and BC played in the latter half of the Pios’ trip to Beantown to play Boston University and Boston College. The DU student ticket allotment for Homecoming weekend hockey tickets sold out in what a DU official said “has to be a record” amount of time this Wednesday morning shortly after going on sale to students.
DU hockey being the top-ranked team in the country this week and facing the sixth-ranked Boston College Eagles on Homecoming Weekend in the 2019-2020 home opener is certainly driving increased ticket demand.

Just like last weekend, 44-0-0 is still in play for the Pioneers. Likely? No. Possible? Again, sure, why not? Last weekend it was the Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks that the Pioneers swept to start the season on the right foot. This weekend, after flying to Detroit from Fairbanks before bussing to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, the Pioneers swept the Lake Superior State Lakers with 3-1 and 4-3 victories. The Pioneers had to overcome first period 1-0 deficits both nights, but once again, thanks to timely offense, and heavy doses of Pepto Bismol in the third period on Saturday night, Denver is returning home from a 10-day road trip at 4-0-0 (just 40 to go).
