Portal Update – Basketball and Gymnastics Take Hits

When taking a look at DU’s major sports teams, the transfer portal has had a mixed impact. Basketball is undergoing the biggest transformation, and gymnastics has taken a big hit, losing its biggest star. Hockey and soccer remain stable, and it is a wait-and-see for lacrosse. David Carle Signs Multi-Year Extension With Denver, Reaffirms Commitment to Program

The University of Denver Department of Athletics announced today that hockey head coach David Carle, pursued heavily by NHL teams with head coach openings, signed a multi-year contract extension. As DU is a private institution, the exact terms and length of the agreement are and will not be released to the public. His current deal, which runs through the 2026-27 season, was signed after he guided the program to its ninth championship in 2022. Pioneers Fall to Western Michigan in First Double-Overtime Frozen Four Game Since 1996

ST. LOUIS – This game had no right to go to overtime, let alone two. For 45-plus minutes, the Denver Pioneers were completely outclassed and outworked by fellow NCHC power Western Michigan Broncos. But that’s the funny thing about Denver Hockey and the playoffs. Sometimes, the balance of play, shots on goal, and yes, the score don’t matter. After killing off a Hagen Burrows holding penalty more than four minutes into the third period, the Pioneers flipped the script, found a window, and tied the game. Outshot 32-8 through two periods, the Pioneers never quit and forced their way back into the game and forced two overtimes when they were left for dead early in the third…unfortunately, it wasn’t enough. Their quest to repeat and earn the program’s third title in four years abruptly ended on the stick of Owen Michaels. That’s hockey. Zeev Buium Named to Hobey Hat Trick

The Hobey Baker Memorial Award Foundation announced the three finalists – the ‘Hobey Hat Trick’ – for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award given annually to the national player of the year. Zeev Buium, Denver Hockey’s do-it-all wunderkind sophomore defenseman, is among the three finalists. DU senior forward Jack Devine, named a Hobey Baker Top 10 finalist for the second-straight year, missed out on the top three. Continue reading Zeev Buium Named to Hobey Hat Trick

Denver Rides Matt Davis’ Heroics to Earn Program’s 6th Frozen Four Berth in 9 Years

So much for all the hand-wringing and bellyaching about blown leads and inconsistent hockey over the last four months. None of that matters now, thanks to the #3-seed Denver Pioneers’ 3-1 victory over the top overall seed Boston College Eagles in the Manchester Regional final. The win gives the Pioneers their second-straight Frozen Four berth, a chance to win their second-straight national title, which would be the program’s third in four years, and their 6th Frozen Four in 9 years, dating back to 2016. Oh, and all they had to do to achieve all of that was to beat the only other team that can rival their success since 2000 – Boston College. Not bad for a Sunday night in late March. Buium Leads DU Over Providence 5-1, Stage Set for Title Rematch

Any fears that the #3 seed Pioneers would be too tired or uninspired to defend their title against #2 Providence were dispelled Saturday afternoon in Manchester, New Hampshire. Zeev Buium paced the dominant performance with 3 points en route to the 5-1 win. Goaltender Matt Davis was nearly perfect, displaying his championship form. Next up is an intriguing rematch with the Boston College Eagles, a repeat of last year’s National Title game. Continue reading Buium Leads DU Over Providence 5-1, Stage Set for Title Rematch

Pioneers Survive Another Blown Lead vs. ASU to Advance to 4th NCHC Title Game

It’s anyone’s guess as to what it was about Arizona State for the Denver Pioneers this season but these matchups and blown DU leads went together like peanut butter and jelly. The Pioneers dropped three of their four regular-season games against the Sun Devils this season and blew multi-goal leads in two of their losses and their overtime victory. So, naturally, when #2 seed ASU and #3 seed DU met in the 2025 Frozen Faceoff Semifinals at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, everyone should have expected DU to blow their 2-0 first-period lead. ASU did indeed tie it in the final minute of the second period. But this Sun Devil comeback did not sink the Pioneers and the defending NCHC champions scored twice in the third, including an empty-netter by Connor Caponi, to end ASU’s season and advance to their second-straight conference title game. Leave No Doubt: Pioneers Rout Tigers in Game Three to Advance to 11th-Straight Frozen Faceoff

If there is an image that should accompany the phrase “leave no doubt” in your mind, it’s the box score of game three of the 2025 NCHC Quarterfinals series between the #3 seed Denver Pioneers and #6 seed Colorado College Tigers. After dropping game one and rebounding in game two, the Pioneers led game three wire-to-wire, took control of the game in the second period, and stepped on the Tigers’ throats in the third en route to the 9-2 victory and 2-1 series win. With the win, the Pioneers advance to the last Frozen Faceoff in St. Paul next weekend with hopes to defend their 2024 conference title and the impressive status as the only program to advance past the Quarterfinal round in each of the NCHC’s 11 conference tournaments (2020 was canceled, you’ll remember).
