Pioneers Inch Closer to Home Ice With 3-1 Win over St. Cloud State

You can probably count on only one hand the number of games since the end of October when the #6 Denver Pioneers (24-8-1, 13-7-1 NCHC) have looked like bona fide national contenders. But you can count tonight’s 3-1 victory at Magness Arena against an upset-seeking St. Cloud State Huskies (12-18-1, 5-15-1 NCHC) team among them. Denver outshot St. Cloud 3-1 and spent what felt like at least 75% of the game in the offensive zone. If not for a strong performance from Huskies goalie Isak Posch behind a well-structured defense, the Pioneers likely would have turned this one into a rout. Jack Devine Records 150th Point as Denver Finishes off Sweep of Miami

It was a weekend of individual milestones in Oxford, Ohio this weekend. Last night, Junior Aidan Thompson tallied his 100th career point in the Pioneers’ 5-1 victory. Then tonight, senior Jack Devine became just the 22nd player in Denver Hockey history to score 150 career points thanks to his two-assist effort in the #6 Pioneers’ (23-8-1, 12-7-1 NCHC) 5-2 victory over the Miami RedHawks (3-25-2, 0-20-0 NCHC). The victory was DU’s 18th consecutive victory over Miami. Continue reading Jack Devine Records 150th Point as Denver Finishes off Sweep of Miami

Thompson Records 100th Point as Denver Takes Care of Business in Game 1 at Miami

There just wasn’t much intrigue to this game. But that was supposed to be the case. #6 Denver (22-8-1, 11-7-1 NCHC) was expected to throttle NCHC and NCAA basement-dwelling Miami (3-24-2, 0-19-0 NCHC) and they did just that. The Pioneers scored twice in the first and second periods and coasted through the third period to a 5-1 victory. Aidan Thompson, who recorded two assists, recorded his 100th and 101st career points in his 106th career game. Four Nations Faceoff: Hockey Wins

10.1 million North American viewers tuned in for last Saturday’s USA-Canada game at the 4 Nations Face-Off — topping every non-Stanley Cup Final game since 2014. No doubt, Thursday night’s championship rematch may double that viewership by the time the numbers are announced. For comparison, 4.7 people watched this season’s NBA all-star game, 6 million people watched last year’s NFL Pro Bowl and 7.4 million viewers watched Fox’s MLB’s baseball All-Star game last season. Denver’s Search for NCHC Consistency Continues in Home Split with North Dakota

If this weekend’s series against archrival North Dakota were the only two Denver games you watched this season, you probably would not have believed that the same team in white hit the ice each night. In game one’s 4-0 shutout, the Pioneers looked like the elite, national title-contending team they claim to be but in game two, #6 Denver (21-8-1, 10-7-1 NCHC) looked listless en route to a 3-1 loss to #17 North Dakota (15-12-2, 10-7-1 NCHC). Sweeping at home or on the road in the NCHC is an admittedly difficult thing to do but the Pioneers’ effort in Saturday night’s loss at Magness Arena left a lot to be desired. Denver Shuts Out North Dakota to Move into Top Half of NCHC Standings

For all of their problems with the rest of the NCHC, the #6 Denver Pioneers (21-7-1, 10-6-1 NCHC) have had no issues with the #17 North Dakota Fighting Hawks (14-12-2, 9-7-1 NCHC) through three games. The Pioneers outshot their visitors 32-21, including 16-4 in a scoreless first period, and altogether outclassed their out-of-state archrival en route to their 4-0 victory – the Pioneers’ first shutout of the Fighting Hawks since the 2019 NCHC Quarterfinal Round – at Magness Arena. At the moment, the 4th place Pioneers are two points clear of the Fighting Hawks and #7 in the Pairwise, up two spots from their position at the beginning of the evening. Pioneers Blow Two Leads, Fall to Sun Devils in Overtime For 3-Point Road Weekend

#6 Denver’s (20-7-1, 9-6-1 NCHC) defense let them down this weekend. In more than 125 minutes of hockey at Mullett Arena in Tempe, the Pioneers surrendered 10 goals, blew two two-goal leads, and found a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in their 6-5 game two overtime loss to #12 Arizona State (17-10-1, 12-6-0 NCHC). For the moment, Denver has fallen to #9 in the all-important Pairwise Rankings and to fifth place in the NCHC standings, one spot out of hosting the best-of-three NCHC Tournament Quarterfinals. Aidan Thompson Calls Game in Overtime to Lift Pioneers over Sun Devils and Extend Tenzer Streak

On a night where the #6 Denver Pioneers (20-6-1, 9-5-1 NCHC) were looking to exact some revenge for a home sweep in November, special teams were anything but special but their dominant play at five-on-five was just enough to outlast their own leaky defense and a pesky #12 Arizona State Sun Devils (16-10-1, 11-6-0 NCHC) team that erased two separate DU leads to win 5-4 in overtime. Entering the game, ASU was tied with Western Michigan for first place in the NCHC so the Pioneers’ two points allowed them to at least move a point closer to the top of the conference and leapfrog North Dakota into 4th place. Pioneers Exorcise Their NCHC Demons in 11-2 Romp of Omaha

Omaha (14-11-1, 10-4-1 NCHC) opened the game with two power-play goals to take a 2-0 lead 8 minutes in. For the next 52 minutes, #5 Denver (19-6-1, 8-5-1 NCHC) flipped the script, scoring 11 consecutive goals, including six in the 2nd period. It was the first time since the second period of the January 13, 2023  game against Miami that they scored six in a period and the first time since December 27, 1995, against Air Force that they scored 11 goals in a game. More importantly, the Pioneers might have exorcised the demons that have plagued them in NCHC play since being swept by Arizona State at Magness Arena at the end of November.
