Denver offense goes cold in Game One shutout loss to Colorado College

Whether it was the Colorado College Tigers’ impeccable and determined defensive effort or a lack of offensive fortitude by the #5 University of Denver Pioneers, Game One of the best-of-three NCHC Quarterfinal matchup at Magness Arena ended in a __-0 shutout for the 7th-seeded Tigers. It was a nightmare 2018 postseason debut for the Pioneers that DU fans certainly hope is not a sign of things to come over the next few weeks. Like a well-oiled machine, the No. 5 University of Denver Pioneers’ system of play employed by head coach Jim Montgomery is constructed from an intricate combination of details. When executed properly, the dynamic unfolds into in an esemplastic affair. As each player acquires and masters their unique role while buying into the team culture, the outcome as a collective unit is synchronous. The Denver Pioneers kick off the Frozen Faceoff playoffs with rivals Colorado College

The stage is set.

The Denver Pioneers host the Colorado College Tigers this weekend in a best-of-three series at Magness Arena.  Head coach Jim Montgomery spoke to the media Thursday leading up to the first round.  He spoke on how hard the Pioneers have been to play against lately, team first attitude, momentum, and how different playoff hockey is.

The Pioneers are 4-2-4 in their last ten games while Colorado College is 4-4-2.  For the season series, both teams are 1-1-2.

When LetsGoDU spoke to Tigers head coach Mike Haviland last time CC was in town, he spoke about the development of his players.  He mentioned that success lies in recruiting and bringing in “your own guys” to help build the program is key.  Haviland has a handful of players that are having career seasons under his watch which is something to look out for in this rivalry.  Haviland is a nominee for the NCHC coach of the year.

As for the Pioneers, they racked up several end-of-season accolades from the NCHC:

This series could be interesting, especially if CC somehow squeaks out a win Friday or Saturday.  With every NCHC in the playoffs, coach Mike Haviland would love to play spoiler this weekend.  But honestly, you’ll probably see a different DU team.  They will be playing a strategic, high-energy style that got them their NCAA title last year.  Expect the Pioneers to be all business.

LetsGoDU joins Magness Mayhem to create some Denver Hockey Double Trouble

Last night, LetsGoDU editor Nick Tremaroli joined Magness Mayhem’s Chris Bayee on a podcast of sorts to talk all things University of Denver Hockey. Topics ranged from the just-announced All-NCHC First, Second, and Rookie teams to the upcoming NCHC Tournament matchup with Colorado College and to a regular season postmortem. It’s must-listen content for DU fans as the postseason gets underway.

Leclerc readies CC for battle in new kit

It started out as an errand with his mother to JOANN Fabrics to get fabric for some TV room pillows. “I found fabric bolts with a velveteen tiger pattern”, said Alex Leclerc, Colorado College’s starting goaltender. “We knew immediately this would be a great project for us!”

“It will be my secret weapon when we travel to Denver to take on the Pioneers. The fabric is super cozy and keeps me toasty on the ice. Mom made curtains and a rug for my dorm room with the extra fabric. It just might be the thing we need to change our luck!”

Leclerc’s dorm room (bed-left) features a tiger print curtain and rug. Alex’s roommate is majoring in film studies and Ancient Sanscrit.

Leclerc carries a 3.25 goals-per-game average and seems to play some of his best hockey against the Denver Pioneers. The NCHC Quarterfinal series begins Friday night at Magness Arena. The puck drops on Game One at 7:00 pm MT.

Tanner Jaillet injured in Denver’s Senior Night tie with Miami

The last-place Miami University RedHawks earned the meaningless extra point in three-on-three overtime for NCHC standings purposes but the #4 University of Denver Pioneers and the RedHawks tied on Senior Night at Magness Arena. Denver started the game well, scoring three goals within the first five minutes of the game, but Miami cooled Denver’s offense off for the remaining 60 minutes of hockey and scored three straight goals of their own to earn the tie. However, by the end of the first period, very few minds were on the result of what was a meaningless NCHC game. Continue reading Tanner Jaillet injured in Denver’s Senior Night tie with Miami

WATCH: Jim Montgomery talks Miami victory, momentum ahead of postseason

The #4 University of Denver Pioneers downed the unranked and last-place Miami University RedHawks by a score of 6-3. Denver dominated most of the game, but Miami pulled within one goal late in the third. Denver responded and put the game out of reach with two goals in the last couple of minutes. Overall, it was a good game for the Pios and head coach Jim Montgomery was pleased with his team’s effort.

He spoke after the game about the game and the momentum his team is building heading into the NCHC Tournament next weekend. Watch his postgame conversation below: Continue reading WATCH: Jim Montgomery talks Miami victory, momentum ahead of postseason

Pioneers earn their wings, shoot down RedHawks at home

After a subpar trip to St. Cloud, Minnesota that saw the Pioneers concede the Penrose Cup to the #1 St. Cloud State University Huskies last weekend, it took the #4 University of Denver Pioneers just two minutes and 13 seconds to take the lead against the last-place Miami (OH) University RedHawks. The Pios immediately grabbed the lead and the game’s momentum and would not give an inch until the waning minutes of the game as they skated to a 6-3 victory. Denver Goes Cold in Loss, 4-2

St Cloud took the Spencer Penrose Cup from Denver last night with a 4-2 win.

Denver, a team that seems to elevate their play against good teams and falter against weaker teams, could not turn it on last night against a physical St. Cloud State team that seemed to want it more than the defending champions. And, again, Denver struggled to create and deliver on the offensive end of the ice.

After the game, Jim Montgomery praised the effort of the Pioneers but thought “St Cloud deserved the Penrose Cup. We need more purpose and more determination. We need McLellan and Heikkinen back in the line-up because they are our two best centers. We gotta’ start start getting some wins – enough of these ties and losses.”
