Overachieving Fall Sports Come to a Close

An over-performing, cobbled-together volleyball team finished with a share of the regular season Summit League Title with three other teams. They traveled to Vermillion, S.D. for the Summit League Tournament, won the first round, advanced to the semifinal and fell Monday to the Omaha Mavericks in five sets (21-25, 21-25, 25-20, 25-15, 14-16). Denver’s Carreau Wins National Championship

Denver’s newest DI sport, Triathlon, did not win the team NCAA Triathlon championship at Tempe, Arizona. The DU team finished fourth. However, a freshman, Maira Carreau, had a historic performance for the University of Denver, earning the top spot on the podium Saturday and an individual national championship for DU. Carreau has three more years of eligibility remaining and if head coach Barbara Perkins recruits and develops a few more stars, Denver will be in the hunt for their first women’s team title to add to DU’s 33 national team championships. Triathlon may be on track to add another national championship team title to the rafters of Magness Arena. Continue reading Denver’s Carreau Wins National Championship

Season Preview: Denver Men’s Basketball Faces Intriguing Season

‘Intriguing’ may sound like an unusual descriptor for a college basketball team. However, in this era of intense roster turnover due to the ease of the transfer portal and increasing NIL (Name, Image & Likeness) deals at larger schools gutting many mid-major rosters, there are more unknowns than ever heading into the season for Denver men’s basketball – and nearly every other mid-major college basketball team as well. New DU Multi-sport Arena is Needed but Faces Hurdles

Does the University of Denver need a new or upgraded arena for non-hockey events?  It’s a big question that’s been on the minds of DU’s athletic and academic administrations for a while now, as the rest of the Summit League continues to upgrade its athletic facilities, leaving DU’s Ritchie Center farther behind and now well older than the students who play there. Add rising interest rates and construction costs to the mix along wih the need for a major donor(s) and the possibility of a major new athletic facility looks challenging at best over the short term.
