1DAY4DU Making the Impossible Possible for DU Men’s Hoops

There are many worthy causes at DU including the beautiful new James C. Kennedy mountain campus, the Chancellor’s Priority Fund, the Learning Effectiveness Program, and Summer Internship Award Programs among others. When it comes to Denver Athletics this year, nearly every program is worthy of notice. Hockey is the shining star, boasting their ninth NCAA championship trophy and, oftentimes, we take for granted that they generally do not need our financial help. However, no DU athletic program is more worthy and needy than Denver Men’s Basketball. Continue reading 1DAY4DU Making the Impossible Possible for DU Men’s Hoops

NIL: The Ten Ton Gorilla that Can’t and Won’t Be Caged

The devil you know is sometimes better than the one you don’t know – or so they say. Probably no organization in athletics, at least collegiate athletics, is more universally hated than the NCAA – with the SEC coming in a close second. In the latest Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) drama, according to an article by Sports Illustrated, college athletic directors are pleading with the NCAA to regulate and sanction schools with boosters who have struck deals with players to sign with their schools. Helter Skelter – No more waiting for Next Year

The way to build a college basketball team used to be patience. Add pieces every year, develop the student-athletes with solid coaching and, with a little luck, you build a contender. However, with the advent of the transfer portal, student-athlete mobility, and win-now approaches at all levels of collegiate basketball, teams can build a winner during just a single cycle of recruiting and transfer portal activity. Transfer Portal Exodus Hits Summit League Men’s Basketball Teams Hard

Welcome to basketball transfer portal season once again. While the numbers change by the hour, as of this writing, 638 players have entered their names in the Division I men’s basketball portal already this year. This does not include players who have exhausted their eligibility at the end of this past season. Some conferences have been hit harder than others and the Summit League certainly falls into that category. Continue reading Transfer Portal Exodus Hits Summit League Men’s Basketball Teams Hard

KJ Hunt Going Pro, Departs DU

KJ Hunt played a big part in the Denver men’s basketball turnaround this past season. Hunt announced his intention to turn professional, however, forgoing his extra COVID season. Hunt averaged 15.1 points per game, 4.4 rebounds per game, along with 103 assists, all team-leading numbers for the Pioneers.

Hunt was not the only Denver basketball player to announce their intention to play elsewhere. Continue reading KJ Hunt Going Pro, Departs DU

Second Half Surge Pushes NDSU Past DU in Summit League Tournament

Back in October, DU’s senior transfer KJ Hunt talked to the Denver Post about winning an NCAA bid for DU. “It’s not impossible. At all.” A 30-10 outburst by the NDSU Bison broke a tie in the final ten minutes of the Summit League quarterfinal game and ended those dreams. Denver led at halftime 35-32 but the Bison depth finished off the pesky Pioneers, 82-62. While the game was much closer than the final score would indicate, NDSU clearly had the better, deeper team. Denver still has much work to do before they can take the next step in their evolution under head coach Jeff Wulbrun, associate head coach Brandon Dunston and assistant coach Rob Zewe.
