Hot Shooting Omaha Burns Denver, 91-72

Coming off a huge 2-OT win Thursday night. Denver (13-9, 4-3) hit the proverbial wall Saturday afternoon. Omaha shot the lights out –  going 57% (33/58) from the field, 56.5% (13-23) from downtown and 100% from the line (12/12). Denver was caught flat-footed and outrebounded 29-40 as nothing went right for a Denver team that was fatigued from their Thursday night marathon win. No excuses though, Omaha was the better team. The Mavs were led by a Pioneer killer Frankie Filder who put on a clinic with 31 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 1 block. The junior forward is a delight to watch – just not when you have to play against him. Continue reading Hot Shooting Omaha Burns Denver, 91-72

Game For the Ages™ Engineers a Special Moment

There was a 6’6” sophomore forward scholarship player who suited up for his first game Thursday night when Denver topped South Dakota 111-110 in the double overtime classic. Not a basketball scholarship student-athlete mind you but an engineering scholarship student. He was spotted during pick-up basketball games last season at DU and was made a student manager this season. Denver petitioned the NCAA to allow Tolu Baba Ajayi (called ‘T’ by his teammates) to suit up as a regular roster player for Denver after the school holiday break, his first time in an official Crimson and Gold gameday uniform. A Game for the Ages, Denver Stuns South Dakota 111-110 in Double OT

Why mess around with a long game write-up. Let’s begin with the end. Sure, 49 points is great but the game-winning steal by Tommy Bruner was the play of the game.  Let’s just look at the final seconds when Denver found a way to earn a last-second double-OT win at Hamilton Gym.

DU Stacks Second Signature Win in a Week, Denver 78-70 Over North Dakota State

Denver men’s basketball (12-7, 2-1) traveled to Fargo to take on the North Dakota State Bison Thursday night. The Pioneers had not beaten NDSU on the road since a home-and-home sweep in 2018. Despite 15 turnovers and a tough night for Tommy Brunner (except for a huge game-breaking tray in the final 1:09), Denver rode a red-hot Touko Tainamo with 21 points and 5 rebounds along with Jaxson Brenchley with 15 points and 6 rebounds. Ultimately, it was Denver’s defense that kept the Bison from making a field goal and four free throw makes in the final 4:23 to clinch the win. Denver Earns Signature Win Against South Dakota State, 99-80

Denver (11-7, 2-1) played two solid halves of basketball to dominate Summit League blue-blood South Dakota State. After an earlier overtime loss to Oral Roberts at Hamilton Gym earlier this season, Denver was desperate to prove they belong among the top tier of Summit League teams. Saturday afternoon, it was a total team effort, from top to bottom, that secured the first win over SDSU since 2017. It was also the coming out party for Pedro Sanvicente who torched the Jackrabbits with 23 points (9-12 field,  5-7 from three-point) along with 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Ultimately, it was a leaky first-half defense that felled the Pioneers. Continue reading Denver Falls to UNC After First Half Struggles, 86-82

Bruner Wills Denver to Win Over Idaho State, 95-82, in OT

Denver (10-6, 1-1) faced the Idaho State Bengals at Hamilton Gym in the Summit League-Big Sky Challenge. After a horrible first half giving up 46 points, 22 in the paint, it looked like Denver was headed to a startling loss to Idaho State (4-9). However, the nation’s leading scorer, Tommy Bruner, willed Denver back into the game in the second half and the Pioneers went a sizzling six for six from the field in extra time, two three-pointers from Bruner, to swamp the visiting Bengals.
