Denver men’s basketball (2-2) had a slow start, trailing 11-3, to the visiting Colorado Christian University Cougars who feasted early in the paint. Denver was also ice cold from the field as CCU stretched the lead to 17-6 eight minutes into the half. Denver switched to a five-guard lineup to shake things up and the Pioneers started to control the game. DU clawed back against the Cougars and drew even at 3:38, 29-29. Denver took the lead and owned a five-point edge at the break, 38-33.
Denver men’s hoops (1-2) traveled to Ft. Collins to play the Rams Tuesday night. DU played a solid first half, trailing at half by two points 36-34. The Rams took advantage of eight DU turnovers in the final 20 minutes and a 10-0 Ram scoring run to earn the win. Continue reading Denver Fades in the Second Half, Falls to CSU, 74-65→
Denver is who we thought they were – guard-driven, disruptive defensively and a collective offense finding itself. It wasn’t always pretty Friday afternoon but Denver basketball gave fans a glimps of what might be in an 97-80 win over Western Colorado at Hamilton Gym. Most DU fans did not expect the Pioneers (0-1, 0-0 Summit League) to beat Stanford on the road to open the 2024-25 campaign. Denver’s best chance to compete in this game (and this season, for that matter) depended on limiting turnovers, relying on veterans, and playing solid defense. Denver had trouble in all three categories Monday afternoon against Stanford. Denver had 20 turnovers, only generated 28 points from their 5-player returning core, and surrendered 80+ points. Emerging freshman guard, Sebastian Akins, led Denver in scoring (15) but his performance cast a shadow on Denver’s more experienced players. Head Coach Jamie Franks led Denver Men’s Soccer (11-2-1, 6-1-0) to yet another Summit League Conference regular season title, their 10th in the Summit League. The Pioneers clinched the top spot in Tulsa Saturday when they defeated Oral Roberts 1-0. Redshirt junior Ian Smith scored the game-winning goal 17 minutes into the second half with a helper from Ronan Wynne. Denver still has one regular season match remaining on Saturday against Omaha. The Summit League Tournament will be held at Pioneer Field a week later with the Pioneers as the top seed. The Summit League basketball coaches and media held their basketball media day on Tuesday this week. During the annual event, the conference unveiled their preseason coaches and media poll. Despite falling in the Summit League championship game a year ago and landing an impressive recruiting class, the Pioneers were picked to finish ninth out of nine men’s Summit League men’s basketball teams. Other rating ‘experts’ are likely to rank Denver accordingly but is their crystal ball right? Continue reading Denver Men’s Hoops Picked to Finish Last By Summit Coaches & Media – Are they Right?→
It was not that long ago when Denver fielded one of the smallest basketball squads under Head Coach Joe Scott and his beloved Princeton offense. On Wednesday, though, 7’0″ Abdulai Fanta Kabba announced on social media his intention to come to DU and join Jeff Wulbrun’s team for the 2024-25 season. His commitment, along with Denver’s 7’0″ Isaiah Carr, gives the Pioneers an imposing presence in the paint and will allow the Pioneers the luxury of going big – really, really big. The added bonus is the flexibility and depth of the current roster to go small as needed or even throw a hybrid lineup on the court if necessary. Denver men’s basketball added size, skill, and defense to bolster the team’s front line for the 2024-25 season. The 6’9″ Tymoteusz (Tymo) Sternicki is a skilled power forward from Poland. He should slide nicely into the spot of recently departed Touko Tainamo, along with 6’8″ senior Pedro Lopez-Sanvicente, giving the Pios quality depth at that position. My, oh my, how the Summit League basketball teams have changed since the opening of the transfer portal and the end of the season. Of the eleven first and second-team All-Summit League awardees, only two remain on their teams – Jamar Brown (UMKC, first team) and Andrew Morgan (NDSU, second team).
