Denver men’s lacrosse (9-4, 4-1) owned nearly all the key statistics in regulation against Marquette Friday night in Milwaukee. The Pioneers led Marquette in shots-on-goal, ground balls, clears and faceoffs. Yet, the Pioneers were forced into a four-minute overtime in Milwaukee. Finally, DU’s Stephen Avery gave DU the game-winner with 1:26 remaining in OT and the Pioneers win, 15-14. The win gives Denver the number two seed at the BIG EAST Tournament next weekend on the same field.

#10 Denver men’s lacrosse (8-4, 3-1) put away a sloppy Providence team on Senior Night at Peter Barton Stadium, 13-6. The Friars lost track of the ball 12 times and were forced into turnovers seven more times on a brisk Rocky Mountain evening. The Pioneers reeled in seven more ground balls than Providence, creating extra possessions and stalling offensive opportunities for the visitors who appeared to still be operating in a different time zone. In a week that featured Matt Brown as DU’s future head coach, it was Coach Bill Tierney’s defense that turned up the heat in the first half – holding the visitors to only two goals. Not to be outdone, the Pioneers scored a host of seven straight goals in Brown’s offense. The Denver ‘D’ capped the night with a length-of-the-field goal by defender Jimmy Freehill, 13-6. It was only a matter of time until the University of Denver was going to make this move and three months after legendary head coach Bill Tierney announced his retirement from lacrosse, the Pioneers have finally made the obvious move official in an announcement today: current offensive coordinator and associate head coach Matt Brown will be the program’s next head coach of DU men’s lacrosse.
It’s been a very busy spring in Division I lacrosse as multiple D-I schools will join new conferences next season, as the Atlantic 10 has just added lacrosse as a sponsored men’s sport, forcing two other conferences, the Northeastern Conference (NEC) and the Southern Conference (SoCon), to drop lacrosse for men for next season, as both conferences lost members to the A-10. It was a forgettable season for DU men’s lacrosse (9-6, 4-1 BIG EAST) as they skidded to an unremarkable close Friday afternoon against Villanova in the BIG EAST Tournament semifinals. The 15-14 defeat defied the saying, “objects in mirror are closer than they appear.” The game really wasn’t as close as the final score would indicate as another conference tournament collapse brought DU’s season to an end. Both Denver men’s and women’s lacrosse programs have their respective BIG EAST conference tournaments this weekend. The women will be fighting for a potential home-field advantage in the first round of the NCAA Tournament – though the 12-10 loss to rival Colorado likely ended that opportunity – and the men are fighting for their postseason lives, hoping to just extend their season. One loss and their season is over. The action will take place this Thursday at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium for the women and Cooper Field (Georgetown) in Washington D.C.for the men. The #19 Denver Pioneers men’s lacrosse team (9-5, 4-1 BIG EAST) won’t win the regular-season conference title like many Pioneer fans have become accustomed to over the past decade but thanks to a dominant stretch of lacrosse that saw Denver finish the season on a three-game winning streak, they finished 2nd in the conference behind Georgetown, the only conference team that beat the Pios. In front of the second-largest crowd in Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium history (2,969), the Pioneers clinched the 2-seed with a dominating victory over the Marquette Golden Eagles (4-10, 2-3) to close out the regular season and enter the postseason on a high note.
