Denver Men’s Soccer Faces Non-Conference Gauntlet

It’s that time again. DU men’s soccer, which received six votes in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll and would be ranked #28 if the poll extended beyond 25, opens with two exhibitions against Air Force and Colorado School of Mines this Sunday and next Saturday respectively. Then Denver opens its road-heavy, challenging non-conference slate, which head coach Jamie Franks has made an annual tradition. Continue reading Denver Men’s Soccer Faces Non-Conference Gauntlet

Update: DU Men’s Soccer Impacts Conference Realignment Options

College soccer season is still nearly seven months away but the Summit League and University of Denver have several key decisions that will need to be considered and made by this summer.

DU men’s soccer, a marquee sport for the University of Denver, continues to look vulnerable with the loss of former Summit League member school Western Illinois to the Ohio Valley Conference. Jeff Colpack of The Mitchell Republic cited the outlook as ‘bleak’ to replace the Leathernecks with a sixth team for the Summit League membership and an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Tournament. Ironically, Denver men’s soccer may be the spark to drive DU to seriously examine other conference options. All this while the NCAA is facing extinction as impatient power-conference members are at the precipice of a break-away as the gulf between the haves and have-nots looks irreconcilable. The Pioneers battled back from a two-game deficit and lost in extra points. The team started 1-7 in non-conference play with a new coach and the loss of key players. In the rematch Sunday night, the Mustangs used a dominant first half and barely hung on as Denver fought back from a 2-0 deficit to fall 2-1 in the second round of the NCAA College Cup Tournament. Weekend Full of Disappointment, Surprise, and Success

There was the joy of a Hocktoberfest hockey win and a road win from DU men’s soccer to clinch their 9th league regular season title. DU volleyball has emerged from the non-conference ashes to become a Summit League threat after 3-2 home wins against St. Thomas and arch-rival South Dakota. An upset tie with Augustana was a shock (the Vikings then beat CC in regulation on Saturday) but the biggest surprise was the shootout loss by #1 seed DU women’s soccer to #4 seed Omaha in the Summit League tournament semifinals at Pioneer Field to end their season.
