Denver Battles for Fall Conference Titles This Week While Hockey Falters on the Road

We told you about Denver hockey team’s (4-2-0) trip out east. After two good periods, they have given up 10 goals and scored only 2 goals over the last four periods as they dropped two games to Providence College and Boston College.  DU has a bye week to regroup and prepare for a road trip to North Dakota in two weeks.

Denver’s other fall teams are all fighting for regular-season titles.

Denver Hockey Road Trip Recap: Pios’ Trip to Northeast Turns Sour

Well, that sucked.

The #8 Denver Pioneers (4-2-0) returned to the northeast this weekend for the first time since December 2018 and came home with its first two losses of the season, one that featured a spectacular third-period collapse while the other continued and finished off the weekend’s downward spiral. And to think it all started so well in Rhode Island, too… Continue reading Denver Hockey Road Trip Recap: Pios’ Trip to Northeast Turns Sour

Denver vs. Boston College Q&A with BC Interruption

Now that nonconference hockey games have returned to our lives after a one-year hiatus due to Covid-19, the #8 Denver Pioneers will renew their annual tradition of playing two Hockey East teams early in the season. This year, they will travel to the northeast to do battle with the #12 Providence College Friars on Friday before heading north to Chestnut Hill to take on the #10 Boston College Eagles on Saturday. Both games will begin at 5 pm MT and be streamed online (we will tweet the details). Continue reading Denver vs. Boston College Q&A with BC Interruption

Savoie’s Career Night Helps Pioneers Shut Out Falcons and Complete Sweep

Carter Savoie recorded a hat trick and a career-high six total points while freshman goaltender Matt Davis recorded a shutout in his first career start as the #11 Denver Pioneers (4-0-0) cruised past the Air Force Falcons (1-3-0) 8-0 at Magness Arena on Saturday night. It was never a particularly close game for the Pioneers, who topped these same Falcons 4-1 in Colorado Springs last night and still have yet to allow a five-on-five goal through four games this year. 2021-2022 University of Denver Hockey Season Preview

A bit over six months after the Denver Pioneers’ 2020-2021 season was ended by archrival North Dakota in an exhausting overtime loss in the NCHC Tournament semifinal – just two days after the shorthanded Pios dispatched the Omaha Mavericks in a first-round thriller – hope springs eternal at Magness Arena. The Pioneers failed to make the NCAA Tournament for the first time in nearly two decades, but it’s September once again, less than two weeks away from the puck dropping on the 2021-2022 season and the disappointment of the Covid-19 addled season is in the rearview mirror. Heck, just by virtue of the fact that the NCHC’s national championship streak ended, we may as well slap an asterisk on 2020-2021 and forget about it (ducks from the flying objects thrown from the Amherst metropolitan area). Impending BYU Exit Opens the Door to West Coast Conference Membership for Denver

Brigham Young University’s (BYU) likely exit from the West Coast Conference (WCC) to the Big 12 will force membership changes at the West Coast Conference. Not only is BYU the conference’s second-best hoops program (behind Gonzaga, of course) but the Cougars have won eight consecutive WCC Commissioners Cup titles for all-around athletic success. Sound familiar? Denver rakes in the national Directors’Cup for all of Division I non-football schools on an annual basis. Denver Goes 4-2-1 on the Weekend

Women’s soccer (5-1) split a pair of matches.  The Pios waxed Kansas State at DU soccer stadium, 3-1 Thursday evening. Denver had goals from three different players – Riley Baker, Natalie Beckman (of course) and Sydney Sharp. That makes back-to-back Power-Five wins against Utah (Pac-12 ) and Kansas State (Big 12). On Labor day, the Denver backline had a rough first half against the visiting Mustangs from Southern Methodist University (SMU), allowing three goals in a fifteen-minute span, to trail 3-0. In a strange game dominated by the Pios, Denver outshot the visitors 21-3 and 7-3 shots-on-goal (DU also had an ‘own goal) for the entire contest but Mustangs made all their shots count and won the game,  4-2.
