After a “nationwide” search led by University of Denver Director of Athletics Josh Berlo for a new head basketball coach, Berlo has reached to the prairies of northern Minnesota to select Tim Bergstraser, 34, the three-year head coach of NCAA Division II Minnesota State University-Moorhead Dragons. Between 2022 and 2025, the Dragons went 75-32 and reached the NCAA Division II tournament three times, including the Sweet 16 appearance last season. Could Transfer Fees Lessen the Impact of the Transfer Portal?
Jeff Goodman, a national college basketball analyst and co-founder of Field of 68 has come up with a novel idea for basketball – and his idea could expand to other sports as well. The spring college basketball transfer portal closes on April 22nd. By then, well over 2,000 “student”-athletes will have stated their intention to leave their schools for another program. Pioneers Fall to Western Michigan in First Double-Overtime Frozen Four Game Since 1996
ST. LOUIS – This game had no right to go to overtime, let alone two. For 45-plus minutes, the Denver Pioneers were completely outclassed and outworked by fellow NCHC power Western Michigan Broncos. But that’s the funny thing about Denver Hockey and the playoffs. Sometimes, the balance of play, shots on goal, and yes, the score don’t matter. After killing off a Hagen Burrows holding penalty more than four minutes into the third period, the Pioneers flipped the script, found a window, and tied the game. Outshot 32-8 through two periods, the Pioneers never quit and forced their way back into the game and forced two overtimes when they were left for dead early in the third…unfortunately, it wasn’t enough. Their quest to repeat and earn the program’s third title in four years abruptly ended on the stick of Owen Michaels. That’s hockey. Zeev Buium Named to Hobey Hat Trick
The Hobey Baker Memorial Award Foundation announced the three finalists – the ‘Hobey Hat Trick’ – for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award given annually to the national player of the year. Zeev Buium, Denver Hockey’s do-it-all wunderkind sophomore defenseman, is among the three finalists. DU senior forward Jack Devine, named a Hobey Baker Top 10 finalist for the second-straight year, missed out on the top three. Continue reading Zeev Buium Named to Hobey Hat Trick
Denver Rides Matt Davis’ Heroics to Earn Program’s 6th Frozen Four Berth in 9 Years
So much for all the hand-wringing and bellyaching about blown leads and inconsistent hockey over the last four months. None of that matters now, thanks to the #3-seed Denver Pioneers’ 3-1 victory over the top overall seed Boston College Eagles in the Manchester Regional final. The win gives the Pioneers their second-straight Frozen Four berth, a chance to win their second-straight national title, which would be the program’s third in four years, and their 6th Frozen Four in 9 years, dating back to 2016. Oh, and all they had to do to achieve all of that was to beat the only other team that can rival their success since 2000 – Boston College. Not bad for a Sunday night in late March. Continue reading Denver Rides Matt Davis’ Heroics to Earn Program’s 6th Frozen Four Berth in 9 Years
Buium Leads DU Over Providence 5-1, Stage Set for Title Rematch
Any fears that the #3 seed Pioneers would be too tired or uninspired to defend their title against #2 Providence were dispelled Saturday afternoon in Manchester, New Hampshire. Zeev Buium paced the dominant performance with 3 points en route to the 5-1 win. Goaltender Matt Davis was nearly perfect, displaying his championship form. Next up is an intriguing rematch with the Boston College Eagles, a repeat of last year’s National Title game. Continue reading Buium Leads DU Over Providence 5-1, Stage Set for Title Rematch
Part 3: Reaffirming Our Mission or: How We Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Sausage
The last few days and weeks have been difficult for everyone. Based on the statistics and volume of comments, Parts I and II struck a chord among the DU community. But we took no joy or satisfaction in what we reported.
Let’s be clear – we call ourselves LetsGoDU for a reason.
Our loud and passionate fandom has served us well for 20+ years. Our goals will forever remain to elevate and celebrate DU Athletics, connect our fans to DU, and generate school spirit and pride in our alma mater. And, while these are our goals, we also believe that pursuing them is a serious responsibility – especially in a local media landscape with an embarrassing lack of DU coverage. We believe that shedding some light on how the proverbial DU Athletics sausage is made when the need arises is part of that responsibility.

DU Rebounds with Non-Conference Win Against [7/8] Duke, 13-6
It was Noah Manning night in Big D as the senior attack man outscored Duke in the 13-6 neutral site romp. Denver blew open a two-goal halftime lead, outscoring Duke 4-0 in the third quarter, to coast to the win against the Blue Devils at Highland Park High School in Dallas. Denver (5-4) erased last weekend’s home 15-11 stumble against Ohio State with the dominant win against [7/8] Duke. Continue reading DU Rebounds with Non-Conference Win Against [7/8] Duke, 13-6
Jeff Wulbrun Out – Part 2: Picking up the Pieces
In Part 1, we talked about how DU basketball came unraveled. Part 2 discusses the implications of this saga on future basketball at DU.
As we already discussed, the process of the recent “mutual agreement to part ways” between basketball head coach Jeff Wulbrun and DU was messy and likely avoidable, and like all major coaching decisions, there will be consequences. Today, we outline what we believe may be the future implications for the DU Men’s Hoops program.
