First Half Defense Derails DU vs Omaha, 83-76

Denver men’s basketball (13-15, 6-7) traveled to the Big O (that’s what they call it) Sunday to face the Omaha Mavs. Denver, riding a three game winning streak, had a chance to make it four and jump South Dakota and Omaha in the standings, both sitting at 6-6. Unfortunately, shaky defense and hot Omaha shooting sunk the Pioneers. 83-76. Continue reading First Half Defense Derails DU vs Omaha, 83-76

Denver Crushes SDSU in Decisive Win, 79-61

On the heels of a two-game victorious road sweep in North Dakota, DU men’s basketball (13-14, 6-6) returned to Hamilton Gym to face the North Dakota State Jackrabbits. The winnning formula for Denver this season is simple – hold opponents in the 70’s and win. The Jackrabbits have been scoring at a 75.9 per-game clip so if DU held SDSU to their season average, the Pioneers had a good chance at victory. They did even better, besting the Jackrabbits 79-61 in a runaway victory. Continue reading Denver Crushes SDSU in Decisive Win, 79-61

Denver Sweeps the Dakotas, Dismantles North Dakota, 98-79

Denver men’s basketball (12-14, 5-6) went to Grand Forks, North Dakota Saturday afternoon to face the streaking Fighting Hawks. Fresh off a win against (then) conference undefeated NDSU, the Pioneers looked to put the brakes on the Fighting Hawks six-game winning streak. Three DU players scored 20+ points but it was solid, complimentary defense that aided Denver in the win. DU put together a Dakotas road show, leading the entire game from start to finish. Pioneers Fail to Survive Another Blown Third-Period Lead as Broncos Win Last Frozen Faceoff

Alex Bump has been a problem all season long for Western Michigan’s opponents and tonight, in the NCHC Frozen Faceoff Championship game – the last one in St. Paul – he was the difference. The #3 seed Denver Pioneers shot out to a 3-0 lead in the second period but the #1 seed Western Michigan Broncos, led by their leading scorer, came back in the third to tie it before Bump scored the game-winner just 22 seconds into the second overtime. The Pioneers were looking for their second straight and fourth overall NCHC Tournament title. Instead, the Broncos come away with their program’s first-ever conference tournament championship. Pioneers Fall to Tigers in Game One of NCHC Quarters

The #3-seed Denver Pioneers raced out to a 12-0 shots-on-goal advantage over #6-seed archrival Colorado College Tigers in the first 10-plus minutes of the first period. By the end of the opening period, DU had a 14-3 advantage on the shots board…but the game remained scoreless. And despite Jack Devine’s gritty goal in the second half of the second period to open the scoring, DU’s scoreless first period might have been what doomed them in their 3-1 game one loss to CC in the best-of-three NCHC Quarterfinal series at Magness Arena. Pioneers Retain Gold Pan, Move into 3rd in NCHC with 4-1 Victory over Colorado College

It was the same story that DU and CC fans have seen so many times over the last four years – Kaidan Mbereko was strong, elite even, but ultimately wasn’t enough, and the Pioneers pulled away in the third period. At Magness Arena tonight, in front of 7,023 onlookers, the #7 Denver Pioneers (25-9-1, 14-8-1 NCHC) scored on the power play early then ran into a brick wall named Mbereko before scoring three times in the third to salt away the game and clinch their sixth-straight Gold Pan with a 4-1 victory over #20 Colorado College (17-15-1, 11-11-1 NCHC). Defenseman Eric Pohlkamp recorded a four-point night with three assists and the empty-net goal to seal the Senior Night victory and send off the most accomplished class in program history off in style. Cale Ashcroft Stuns Maine In Final 20 Seconds to Lift Pioneers over Black Bears

Cale Ashcroft may not score many goals – just three so far this season – but when he does, you can bet they’re important. With just 20 seconds remaining in a tight, nationally televised nonconference matchup between the #6 Denver Pioneers (15-4-0, 4-4-0 NCHC) and #7 Maine Black Bears (12-4-2, 5-2-2 HE), Ashcroft sent a seeing-eye shot through a maze of Maine skaters, past a helpless Albin Boija, and into the back of the net to break a 1-1 deadlock. The shot silenced a raucous Alfond Arena crowd and lifted the Pioneers to a 2-1 road victory. While one win, even against a team as elite as Maine, cannot rinse all of the bad taste from last weekend’s exhibition disaster from our collective mouths, this game certainly went a long way to getting the season back on track. #1 Denver Tops #20 Wisconsin in Season’s First Comeback Victory

Through their first four games, the top-ranked Denver Pioneers ( 5-0-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) had not trailed. That changed barely four minutes into game five, though, as the #20 Wisconsin Badgers (1-4-0, 1-1-0 Big Ten) struck first at Magness Arena in the first matchup between the two old WCHA rivals in Denver since 2016. But after a back-and-forth first period played to a 2-2 tie, the Pioneers’ Cale Ashcroft sealed the victory with his second-career goal before Carter King iced the 4-2 victory with an empty-netter. Mike Hastings’ Badgers were Denver’s stiffest test through the season’s first four weeks and despite an inconsistent effort through the first two periods, the Pioneers passed and remained unbeaten.
